Barbara Hanigan

Barbara E. Hanigan, 55, of Sheffield Lake quietly passed away unexpectedly at her home. She was born January 25, 1966 in Lorain, Ohio to parents Darrell and Frances "Lee" (nee Lamie) DeWitt. After graduating high school, Barb DeWitt began working at Thogus which looking back was one of her best decisions. She met Jeff Hanigan at work and they began dating. They married on June 8, 1985 and soon began expanding their family to eventually include three sons whom she loved very much. Even though she only had three children of her own, Barb made certain her home was open and welcoming to everyone. Her son's friends were often there, and they always found love, support and care. Barb went on to work at Western Enterprises for the last 27 years. As her sons grew into adulthood she expanded her "family circle" to include co-workers, neighbors, and close friends. She and Jeff would often stop at Tailgators after work and the friends there made it a second home for her. Known as "mom" to many her genuine compassion, laughter, and beautiful heart made her adored by everyone she met. Barb loved music, pull-tabs, trucks and just having a good time. Her favorite vacation spot quickly became Topsail, North Carolina where she would spend hours on the beach hunting for shark teeth. She found joy in life and gave joy to others. Barb is survived by her beloved husband of 35 years Jeff Hanigan; loving sons Patrick (Jeffrey) Hanigan, Thomas (Cecelia Ruta) Hanigan, and Christopher Hanigan; one cherished granddaughter Giovanna; dear siblings Timothy (Pauline) DeWitt, Michael (Brenda) DeWitt, Dale (Sheila) DeWitt, Rhonda (Marty) Mackey, Donald (Theresa) DeWitt, and Dean (Kathy) DeWitt; and many nieces and nephews. Her friendship will be deeply missed by many including Jean Dubosh, Chris Lesher, Bob and Deanna Wiemels, David Lopez, and Jeff and Caroline Lilly. Barb is preceded in death by her parents.
