Family-Placed Obituary

INWOOD, Dr. Barbara Hawkes Born in Middletown, Ohio, April 1, 1920, Barbara Hawkes Inwood died October 16, 2005 at the University of Michigan Hospital. She was 85 years old. She was the daughter of the late Helen Hawkes. Barbara was the widow of Jerome Alexander Inwood to whom she was married on March 6, 1943 in Middletown, Ohio. She was a loving, caring and generous wife, mother and grandmother. Dr. Inwood was a graduate of Middletown High School, and received her BA from Miami (Ohio) University, her MA and Ph. D from the University of Michigan. Following the death of her husband Jerome, she and her three children moved to Ann Arbor in 1959. Barbara taught Kindergarten at Wines Elementary School in Ann Arbor for many years. In 1963, she obtained a Fullbright Grant from the government to teach kindergarten in England for one year. In 1980 Dr. Inwood was appointed Principal of Dicken Elementary School in Ann Arbor and retired from that position. Upon her retirement, the media center at Dicken was renamed the Inwood Media Center. For many years, she was also the Principle in charge of elementary Summer School in the Ann Arbor Public School. Many current and former Ann Arbor Public Schools staff members and students fondly remember her. Barbara owned and operated the very popular Wood's Inn, "Ann Arbor's Bed & Breakfast Hostelry In The English Tradition" from her 1859 home on Ann Arbor's west side. Dr. Inwood was a long time member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor and volunteered in many activities in the Ann Arbor Community. Mame, as her loving grandchildren called her, loved her garden, her pets, her children, grandchildren, antiques and so many wonderful and dear friends. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. Her strength, courage and spirit will cast its light, even to the end of time. Survivors include two children: Jeffrey J. Inwood (Fiancée, Paula) of Ann Arbor, Jon D. Inwood, (Janice) of Chelsea; daughter Jennifer B. Leach, preceded her in death in 1991 at the age of 41. Mrs. Inwood was my third grade teacher at Sherman School in Middletown. I thought that she was the most wonderful teacher. I was so pleased to read about all that she has accomplished. Your family must have been very proud of her. I am sure that your many happy memories will help to comfort you.

I send my deepest sympathy.
