She lived the early part of her life in Port Washington, N.Y. on Long Island and often mentioned how much she enjoyed visits to Manhattan in those years. She attended Wooster College in Ohio before transferring to Pembroke College (at Brown University) where she graduated with a degree in English. She married Fred Goodman on August 27, 1955. They lived many happy years in Ann Arbor, Mich. where they raised 3 sons, Peter, Timothy and Christopher. Barbara moved to California in 1979 where she met the second love of her life, Melvin Lees. After marrying in 1980, they lived in Calabasas and Morro Bay until settling in San Luis Obispo, where they immersed themselves in the community. Barbara participated in archery, knitting clubs, Solstice Sisters and was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. She was a lifelong musician who played the cello, French horn, piano and sang in choir. She was a cellist in symphonies in Plymouth, Mich., Ventura, Calif. and San Luis Obispo. In addition to her professional performance career, she was a highly respected and talented music teacher. Barbara will be greatly missed by her family and friends and remembered for her larger than life personality and desire to make people laugh and learn. She is preceded in death by her mother, Hesterella Wheeler; her father, Robert D. Wheeler; her brother, Robert Wheeler and husband, Melvin Lees. Barbara is survived by her three sons, Peter (Rhonda) Goodman, Tim (Darci) Goodman and Chris (Kathryn) Goodman; along with her grandchildren, Zachary and Amanda Goodman, Molly Goodman, Matthew, Jordan and Jessica Goodman. Barbara, I miss you!! I keep coming across things and thinking, "Oh, I should tell Barbara about this!", forgetting you are gone. Thanks for all the times you were supportive of me; even when I doubted myself, you were always there to cheer me on.

Barbara was a devoted mentor and teacher of many young musicians on the Central Coast. It was heartening to see her at City Council meetings. She was civic-minded and supported the quality of life, beauty and conservation of our natural resources in San Luis Obispo. Barbara had a beautiful sparkle and will be missed.

What a privilege it was to know Barbara, who became a dear friend to me and my husband Jason in recent years and honorary grandmother, or 'Nanny B', to my twin daughters Harriet and Romilly.

I will never forget the week that we spent together just a few weeks before she passed away. And that I spent my 40th birthday having dinner with her, just the two of us. We both knew it would be the last time we would see each other so it was very sad to leave, but I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to say goodbye in person.

We have a beautiful photograph of Nanny B in our sitting room, which the girls say goodnight to every night, and in the future I look forward to sharing the books, music and many hilarious letters she sent.

It is heartbreaking not be able to attend the memorial as the twins are bridesmaids at a wedding on London, England that day, but I will visit Barbara next time we are in California.

Deepest sympathies to all those that loved her.
