Barbara Jean Walton Taylor was born in Chicago on February 5, 1930 to Julia Campbell, née
Walton and Charles Walton. The only girl, joining four brothers, began an extraordinary journey,
notably first marked as she was double promoted in grades while attending Burke Elementary
School in Chicago. Having played the piano professionally since the age of nine, she became a
member of the inimitable Captain Walter H. Dyett’s band at Chicago’s DuSable High School.
Seeing the promise in Barbara, Captain Dyett recommended her as one of few DuSable High
seniors to be awarded a four-year scholarship to attend Tennessee A and I State College (now
Tennessee State University) to become a founding member of the college’s marching/show
band in 1946.
While at Tennessee State, Barbara pledged the Alpha Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc. in 1947. Over the years, she became a member of Gamma Psi Omega Chapter in
Gary, Indiana, where she co-wrote the chapter’s official song. In 1990, Barbara became a Life
Member and in 2022, she was honored as a 75-year member of the sorority, a rare and
coveted accomplishment.
As an educator in the Gary Community School Corporation for forty years, she had earned a
Bachelor of Science in Education from Tennessee State and a Master in Education from
Indiana University at Bloomington.
While living in Gary, Barbara was a member of St. Timothy Community Church for almost fifty
years. As a member of the Senior Choir, she wrote a youth skit and a song, “The Lord’s
Blessings” sung by the Senior Choir and dedicated to the late Rev. Dr. Robert Lowery, in
celebration of his 40th pastoral anniversary.
Upon her return to Chicago in the autumn of her life, Barbara traveled to Greece, Turkey, and
Israel; renewed her membership with The Leaguers of the Chicago Urban League, serving as
President of the auxiliary group from 2011- 2013; and actively served at United Church of Hyde
Park, participating in many services as co-liturgist and steward of the church membership’s
Birthday Calendar until 2015.
Barbara Jean Walton Taylor transitioned from her 92-year-old life on Wednesday, October 19,
2022. Her family is comforted in believing that she was greeted by her father; mother; brothers,
Charles, Den’on, and the twins, Laurence and Lester; and her grand pup, whom she named,
Music. Missing her earthly presence, are her son, Jules Blake (Ava); her daughter, Lori Jean;
her grandson, Justin Blake; several nieces and nephews; and many long-standing friendships.
Her family has planned a memorial service for February 4, 2023 at St. Timothy Community
Church, 1600 West 25th Avenue, Gary, Indiana.

Blake and Lori, I lived around the corner from you in Means Manor. Lori you were too young to remember me. Your mother was classy, smart and the best dressed woman in town! My mother Helen used to tease, "If God made two outfits, he gave Barbara one and kept the other!" I had no idea how mega talented she was! Much love and peace!

Hey Lori, or as I've known you as "Sparkle."
I'm honored to write a little about my memories of your mom, and hope that you feel supported during this time.
I have known Ms. Taylor for a while, and as Lori's mom with her big infectious smile and beautiful soul.
Ms. Taylor was always so sweet and gentle and caring and I could feel her beautiful heart and genuine love for me and others every time I was around her and Lori.
She enjoyed talking about her music and teaching and serving in her church and with the AKA sorority and so many other things.
She was a wealth of knowledge and I was often intrigued just to listen to her and be in her presence. She made me laugh and smile and showed her interests in me and what was going on in my life and so much more, which I really appreciate throughout the years.
I also loved to see how close she and Lori were as mother and daughter, which was such a beautiful sight to see of abundant joy and love.
I could write so much more, but I will continue to cherish Ms. Taylor and her loving and caring spirit.
I will always remember Ms.Taylor as a beautiful person, a bright light, and the essence of love and joy that now shines through eternity in my heart.
Peace Ms. Taylor and I send you prayers for you Lori (Sparkle), as you go through this journey.

I offer you my thoughts, prayers, and well-wishes during this difficult time. May the love which comes from the memories of your mother comfort you now and in the days ahead. Aunt Barbara leaves behind so many special memories. She would always remind me of the time when I received a haircut courtesy of my brothers. That made us both laugh and smile. What an incredible woman Aunt Barbara was. Sending the family LOVE.

Lori, I send sincere condolences to you on the passing of your mother, Mrs. Barbara Taylor. A pillar of the Gary community, she served as a positive role model for so many of us young women as we muddled through the art of growing up. Thanks to Blake, I am even more aware of her many achievements and recognitions for said achievements. And what a blessing that she lived to become one of 11Diamond. members of her and your beloved sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha. A couple of memories among many of Mrs. Taylor that stand out for me; one being her active involvement in the Miss Gary Pageant during the year I participated and second and more current was her pride in Justin as he graduated from high school. Lori, losing our mothers is tough; but I hope you are able to find comfort and solace in the many wonderful memories you have of the awesome, classy lady you called Mom.
Sincerely,
Sandra Hawkins Bruce

My husband affectionately referred to Barbara as, “The most beautiful woman in the world.” This expression fits well for a woman who was beautiful inside and out and exhibited so much elegance, grace, excellence, and love. She played an important role in my journey and helped me be the best in all areas of my life. Her smile, her hugs, and the warmth in her eyes always felt like home. Barbara, you will be missed dearly! Thank you for being a gift to the world. Your light will continue to shine through your beautiful family!
My deepest condolences to the family. Sending love, courage, and strength to the family. Lori, thank you for sharing your Mom with the world!

I was blessed to be a comember with Ms. Taylor in the St. Timothy Church February birthday group. We shared in many group birthday celebrations as well as group activities. She was always so poised, pleasant, pretty and had an awesome personality. I had a personal connection with her due to my close relationship with her son, my high school classmate. She is missed by all who had the pleasure of experiencing her kind warmth. Rest well Ms. Taylor. Much love ❤. Pam Williams

Growing up in Gary, Indiana during the 60's and 70's was such a wonderful time for me. There as a great sense of Black pride and community that molded and shaped youngsters like me who were fortunate enough to be beneficiaries of such love, guidance and oversight. I was fortunate because of my friendship with Blake and I felt what is meant by the old saying, "It takes a village..." My personal heroes have always been educators and Mrs. Taylor was one of the best. More than that, I appreciated her treating as one of her own, when we, the neighborhood kids would spend time on her front porch - just being kids. We were safe, we were happy, and we were blessed.

Ms. Taylor’s passing marks the passing of an era. I cannot find the words to capture my emotions. I was blessed to be surrounded by great people like Ms. Taylor during my childhood. Ms. Taylor was always very gracious and had a quiet strength that I will miss. Her presences could light up any room/event. Ms Taylor, Duke and Natalie Ousley, Reverend and Ms Lowery, formulated a nuturing community that was ahead of it’s time. I rejoice at her transition and the prayers of the Ousley family go out to the Taylor family.
