Barry BERMAN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 18 to Oct. 19, 2017.
BERMAN, Barry Lee Barry Lee Berman of Sandy Springs (GA) passed away Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017. He was 75 years old. Born in Baltimore (MD), on Oct. 9, 1942, Barry devoted his life to education and to his family. A graduate of Baltimore's Polytechnic Institute in 1960 and Case Institute of Technology (which soon merged with Western Reserve University to form Case Western Reserve University) in 1964, Barry earned his Ph. D in physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1969. After being a physics professor at colleges in Kentucky and New York-where his first daughter, Brenna, was born-Barry became fascinated by computers and computer software, eventually spending his yearlong sabbatical studying the fast-growing late 1970s trend. His passion for educational and personal computing, and eventually the internet-which continued throughout his entire life-soon prompted him to leave teaching for educational sales. He spent more than 30 years in the industry, working for Fourier Systems, Wicat Systems, SMARTHINKING, and Pearson until his retirement in 2016. Barry's tenure at Wicat Systems brought him to Atlanta in 1982, where he met Dr. Betsy Gard at a Jewish singles' event in two years later. The two were married in June 1986 and together they raised their children, Brenna, Sarah, and Danny. Barry was an avid sports fan and loved watching University of Wisconsin football, the Baltimore Colts and later the Baltimore Ravens. He also enjoyed installing home electronics, as well as traveling with his wife both abroad and throughout the United States, especially to the National Parks. Barry is survived by his wife, Dr. Betsy (nee Schlesinger) Gard; sister, Judy (nee Berman) Zimlin; daughters: Brenna (nee Berman) Broadnax and Sarah (nee Gard) Lazarus, son, Danny Berman, and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care, and continuing at Arlington Memorial Park with Rabbis Analia Bortz and Mario Karpuj of Or Hadash and Rabbi Joshua Lesser of Bet Haverim officiating. Arrangements by Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care, Atlanta (770) 451-4999.

On this anniversary, I just wanted to let the Berman family know that he is remembered and missed. I only worked with Barry, but his impact on even just casual associates like me carries on.

I am sorry for this belated condolence, as I just heard from a friend that Barry has passed. I worked with Barry years ago and always liked and admired him greatly. He was a wonderful person and great contributor to education technology field. A wonderful man. I am so sad.

I am so sorry for the tremendous loss that his family and friends are surely feeling. I knew Barry through our work together on our UWG, eCore, and Smarthinking collaborations. He was *always* such an engaging professional and genuinely kind person. He was smart, witty, and always went the extra mile to assist whenever possible. In my 20 years as an administrator, dealing with maybe 100 different outside business partners, very few could ever hold a candle to Barry (or his peer, Danny). I am so sad that the world has lost such a good soul.

We were shocked when hearing the news of Barry's passing. Barry was an ideal colleague and member of the Wells College faculty back in the early 70s; Wells College students also considered Barry as one of the best professors on campus. Although saddened by the news I will always cherish the fond memories I have of those early years when we were just beginning our careers as young professors at Wells College. Please accept our condolences and know that you are in our thoughts as you grieve the loss of your dear father, spouse, grandfather, etc.

Barry was an amazing SAMMY big brother to me at Case. Kind, helpful, and smart as hell. I used to love looking over his study materials, writen so logically and clearly in a perfect hand. As president of the school, he served as my personal advisor when I was president of the IFC. He called me about a year or two ago just to reconnect. Though ours paths never crossed in person, I loved hearing from him. Just listening to his voice brought back such warm memories. He will be missed by all who knew him. May he Rest In Peace and May his memory be for a blessing. Neil Moss
