Barry Mabin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 29, 2025.
Barry Mabin, age 85, of Browns Mills, NJ, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Virtua Mount Holly Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Barry was born in Michigan to Lelia and Clarence "Nick" Mabin, the fifth of seven children.

His mother, Lelia, graduated from Shorter College in Little Rock, Arkansas with a teaching degree. His father, Clarence, worked as a machinist for the Pere Marquette Railroad and gained local fame as a star pitcher for the Grand Rapids Athletics, a Negro League baseball team. Clarence led his team to a 1917 state championship. He inspired in Barry a deep love for athletics, hard work, and perseverance.

Barry graduated from South High School in 1957, where he quickly established himself as one of the greatest runners in Grand Rapids history. He ran track and cross country, remaining undefeated in regular-season 800-meter competitions during both his junior and senior years. At the Michigan State High School Track Meet, Barry led the 800-meter final until the last 25 yards in heavy rain, where he lost footing and narrowly finished second. Despite that heartbreaking moment, Barry's talent and spirit left a lasting mark, and many still regard him as the greatest half-miler to ever come out of Grand Rapids.

Throughout his life, Barry remained a year-round runner, competing in track meets across the country and beyond. His stubborn determination - a proud Mabin family trait - drove him to train and compete in every season, no matter how cold or hot it was.

After earning a track scholarship to Michigan State University and continuing his studies and athletic career at Ferris State University, Barry joined the United States Air Force, where he honorably served for over 20 years.

After retiring from the Air Force, Barry returned to his greatest passion - running. He continued to lace up his sneakers and race well into his later years, including his participation in the beloved Belmar 5 Mile Run Race, a tradition he cherished.

Barry had a soft spot for animals, especially dogs, and a lifelong passion for sports.

Barry is survived by his children: James (Bonnie), Nirma, Larry (Eva); his son-in-law, Scott; his brother Michael (Yvonne); his grandchildren: Maya, Ethan, Cara, Russell, Jimmy, Argus, Tasha, Victor, Richard, Allyson; and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda Harville, and his siblings: Jacqueline Nickerson, Edward Mabin, Miriam Marchand, Joel Mabin, and Clarence Mabin, Jr.

He will be remembered for his strength and fighting spirit - to his country, to his passions, and to those he loved.

A burial service will be held at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barry's memory to the American Cancer Society.
