SPRINGFIELD - Barry M. Scarlett, 66, a lifelong resident of Springfield, died at 3:35 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at St. John's Hospice.
He was born Oct. 26, 1942, in Danville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scarlett. He married Sharon Howlett on May 30, 1964.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jason; and a great-grandson, Kaiden.
Mr. Scarlett worked in bridge supervision for the Illinois Department of Transportation, retiring after 35 years of service.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
He was a wonderful, caring husband, father and grandfather. He loved to paint ceramic clowns.
Surviving are his wife, Sharon; a daughter, Dana (husband, Keith) Klockenga of Springfield; two sons, Daniel Scarlett (fiancee, Crystal) of North Carolina and Richard (wife, Lori) Howlett of Springfield; four grandchildren, Ian, Bradley, Brandon (fiancee, Niki) and Brittany; a sister, Dee (husband, Charles) Tippy of Springfield; a brother, David of California; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial gathering will be held from 11 a.m. until time of memorial service at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2009, at St. John's Lutheran Church, with Pastor Greg Busboom officiating.

Please accept our deepest sympathy and prayers for the loss of Barry. Some of my earliest and fondest childhood memories involve growing up with your family on Johnson Lane. Whether it was being babysat by Sharon, spending the night with Danny, or Barry's special ham, I enjoy them all. May the God of all glory bless and keep you all during this difficult time.
