Barry Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 22, 2025.
Barry Paul Smith, 83, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025.

Born in the Bronx on February 12, 1942, Barry was raised with his five siblings in New Rochelle, New York, and is survived by his only son, Darren C. Smith, and his wife, Leigha Cornett; brothers Kevin C. and Stephen Smith and sister Moira V. Tully. "B.P" was the 4th child of George & Virginia and was deeply proud of his family, maintaining close relationships with them through the years - including his 14 nieces and nephews and their immediate families.

Barry served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1959-1963 and carried the values of honor, courage and resilience with him throughout his life. His service began in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and included a deployment to Cuba before his medical discharge and return to civilian life. After detouring through California, he returned to his hometown, met and married Mary F. O'Connell and became a father. Barry built and operated several successful businesses in Westchester County, including his two delicatessens in Pelham and Yonkers.

Barry moved to Port St. Lucie in the mid-2000s, drawn to warm weather and endless sunshine. He spent his days with family and friends, driving his convertible to the beach and watching sports with best buddies at the Black Dog Cigar Bar. Life was, indeed, good.

At his request, no service will be held. The family may choose to have a celebration of life at a later date.

Barry will be remembered for his unique sense of humor, free spirit and unwavering loyalty to those he loved. He charted his own course through life and his legacy lives on in the lives of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed. A man of many phrases and sayings, perhaps no words summed up his approach to life more than these from his favorite song:

When I'm gone

Put it in stone

"He left nothing behind"

I ain't here for a long time

I'm here for a good time

Enjoyed knowing this man. As a kid he gave me summer jobs. I I would build a rock wall and each year I would need to rebuild it. Found later he would knock it down before I arrived for the summer. Time to rest now. Michael Vaughn

Barry came into my life in 1979 when I became a very junior partner in his Pelham, NY store. From that point forward, not only was he a chief mentor in my life, he became and remained one of my best friends for over 46 years. I loved him and will miss him every day.

I had heard so many stories about Mr. Smith while working about two decades with his son, Darren. And what a pleasure it was to finally meet him at Darren and Leigha's beautiful wedding after so many stories over the years, and knowing he tuned into the radio show to listen to his son from afar.

So many of us form indelible sports bonds with our parents and this was no exception.

What a proud dad he was of his son.
RIP, Mr. Smith.

We first meet Barry at Darren and Leigha´s wedding. We hit it off from the start. Then we saw him at Christmas in Florida. As you can see from the picture we had a great time.
