Barry Stein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 21, 2024.
Barry Stein, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of tenacity, laughter and love. Born in Denver in 1944 and raised by his mother Dorothy Waxman (Cohen) who instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance.

His career began early, working in his uncle's pawn shop, which eventually evolved into Waxman's Camera. In 1975, Barry took a bold step by moving his young family to Dallas to open his own venture, Barry's Camera and Video. His passion and dedication transformed this small business into a chain of ten successful locations across Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio, culminating in his retirement in the early 1990s. Known as "The Camera Cowboy from Dallas," he was a recognizable figure in the community, often sporting his signature cowboy boots and western shirts.

Barry's contributions to the photography industry were recognized when he was honored with the Retailer of the Year award from the Photographic Marketing Association in 1981. Outside of work, he was an avid fisherman, cherishing the time spent fishing in the Colorado Rockies with his grandfather-a passion he nurtured throughout his life. The serene rivers of Colorado were his favorite escape. He delighted in sharing his love of Colorado with his three children, Todd, Amy, and Julie.

Barry traveled the world, visiting places like Japan, Hong Kong, and Italy, and going on an African safari. He particularly cherished his summers in Colorado with his children and later with his grandchildren, Paige and Aaron. His wit and humor were infectious, captivating anyone fortunate enough to hear his stories, whether they revolved around his travels, career, family.

After retiring, Barry split his time between Dallas and Winter Park, Colorado, He embraced his role as a grandfather with enthusiasm, bringing joy and laughter into the lives of Paige and Aaron with his playful spirit and quirky humor.

Later, he moved to The Villages, Florida, to be closer to his sister Barbara and her husband, Bob Martin.

Barry is survived by his children, Todd Stein (wife Kate), Amy Miller (Stein), and Julie Stein; his grandchildren, Paige and Aaron Miller; his sisters Barbara Martin and Varna Bernstein; and his children's mother, Bobbi Stein. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His charismatic spirit and the memories he created will forever live on in their hearts.

A celebration of Barry's life will be held at a later date, where friends and family can share stories and honor the remarkable man he was. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either of the following charities in his memory.
