It warms my heart knowing that Dr. Ben and my Uncle Richard, affectionately known as "Coach" are united again in heaven as heavenly brothers. They'll have so much catching up to do with my dad and my Uncle Fito too! I'm sure they are having a joyful time with no worries and no pain...

Once when visiting Ben and Patty and eating out, a waiter recognized Ben. Ben took the time to talk to this young man, encouraging him and genuinely interested. It didn´t matter your status, your wealth or where you came from, Ben was always kind, supportive and welcoming. I didn´t see him often, but I miss him.

I am a friend/classmate of Patty from Jacksonville, Florida. When Patty started bringing this Dr Ben guy to our high school reunions, many years ago, I have to tell you he was going to have to pass multiple screening interviews to make sure he was an acceptable fit. Patty was special to a lot of people over here, to say the least.
Well as you can probably guess, he aced all the exams. Ben was one of those rare people whom you met once and you just don't forget. He was funny, warm, engaging, and just so, so likeable. After his first reunion appearance, for the ones that followed, the pre-reunion question went from "Is Patty coming?" to "Are Patty and Ben coming?" And finally, of course, "Hey if Patty can't make it do you think she'll let Ben come anyway?" That last question is only a half-joke; we'd have loved having him all on his own.
For this dear friend Patty, whom we knew, loved, and treasured virtually all our lives, the main thing was this: he was a great human being, and he clearly made her so, so happy. It's all we could have ever asked for, and we are profoundly grateful.
Rest in peace Ben.

Uncle Ben was a special man for many reasons, but he had a particularly profound impact on my life. In 2007 a friend invited me to the British Open in Carnoustie Scotland, but I was not going to go. When Ben heard this, he insisted that I should not miss such an opportunity. He and Brennan went, too. On that trip, I met my future wife and had my two wonderful daughters, Sadie and Lilly. Because of Ben and that trip (and the many other good things Ben did), my life was impacted for the better. I am grateful and truly blessed to have had him in my life.

Dr. Ben has been a part of our lives for many years through our favorite Uncle Richard and Aunt Estelle. We used to see Ben walk down the sidelines when my uncle coached the Edinburg Bobcats...and Ben was always there. Ben always loved his "kisses" when he saw you! and then asked for another one! He will be missed so much. Our sincerest condolences to Patty who lovingly watched over and cared for Ben and to his entire family for their loss. May God bless you all. To the dear Garza family, I was so heartbroken to learn of Dr. Ben's passing. He was my favorite doctor, ever! I remember whenever I would visit, he would greet me with a hug, even when I was sick. Now, I cringe knowing that I did that to him. He had the best bedside manner, and always made me feel like family, asking about my parents, sisters, etc. He encouraged me to go to UT, and gave me the best advice right before I took off to college. He said, " Whenever I didn't finish all my homework or study for my exams, I never could enjoy my weekends because I'd have that worry in the back of my head. So make sure you study every night after your classes so that when Friday night comes you can enjoy your weekend with a clean conscience." He also recommended that after Sunday mass I get back into school mode and start studying for Monday. I used this study model to get me through college, and to this day I pass that advice along to my students.
A couple months ago my doctor asked me who my primary care physician was, and I proudly answered, "Dr. Ben Garza." She replied, "He's been retired for several years now."
Rest in peace, Dr. Ben. Your legacy lives on.

I was acquainted with Dr. Ben Garza as I grew up in Scouting, with some memories of him conducting complimentary physicals for boys who had not completed one. I did not get to know him too well, but we all looked up to him as a pillar of Scouting and the community. Condolences to the family. May he rest in peace.

Rest In Peace Dr. Ben.
My deepest condolences to the family.
Back in the early 1970s I was a Recruiter for the National Guard in the Valley.
I started to see Dr. Ben as my primary doctor. We started to talk about the Guard and I told him about the Guard needing physicians and advised him to apply for a Direct Commission and got the rank of Captain.
He was my primary health giver until 1979 when I was transferred to Camp Mabry in Austin.
When he was promoted to Colonel, he was transferred to command the Medical Battalion in San Antonio.
As an Inspector General, I had the honor to inspect his unit in San Antonio to which he earned a commendation for excellent maintenance of medical equipment.
May the Lord open wide the gates of Heaven for him.

He was at my Moms side when she passed in ‘86 at Edinburg Hospital. He was the first to treat her when she was diagnosed with cancer and as our family practitioner.....he was more than a doctor, he was family. He provided hospice care when he didn’t have too. Dr Ben was all heart.
It’s hard growing up in a small town....everyone that touches your life becomes family and when they leave into the next life, the hole in your heart get harder and harder to heal. Prayers to the Garza family and the entire Edinburg community.
Dr Ben, the biggest Bobcat fan of all time. How he loved us and how he spent countless years treating our team as if we were his boys.

Our sincere condolences and prayers go out to the entire family of Dr. Ben Garza in his passing. What a privilege and honor to have known such a fine and graceful man. His legacy among the Coaching fraternity and friends he touched in Edinburg and the Valley will be forever be remembered. His Love and passion for all sports and sporting events that we shared with him is beyond words of memories and great times. His profound love for his Edinburg family that included his own, Bobcats, UT Pan Am Broncs, UT Longhorns, Philadelphia Phillies and of course Golfing & Hunting will be hard to match. Thank you Dr. Ben for being such a great model for myself and the many others who were Blessed to have known you. Hook Em Horns!!!

What a privilege it was to know this fine gentleman on a personal level. I shall be forever thankful for that blessing...on another level, he dedicated his heart, his time and effort’s to serving his community as well as his patients in an exemplary manner. He set the bar high and led by example being a source of inspiration for many youngsters in our community. In addition he served our country honorably as a distinguished officer in our Military.... Thank you just seems to fall short for all his contributions.... SALUD mi amigo!...and Godspeed in your journey to life’s reward.

Words cannot express my appreciation for Dr. Ben Garza. His commitment to his family, patients and community defined his life’s work. His quick wit and selflessness in helping others will long be his legacy. Always at the ready with a joke or hilarious take, I enjoyed every opportunity to be in his company. And I’ll never forget his infamous bag. If you know you know. And on a personal note, he was a true friend and like the Uncle I never had.
