Benjamin Abrams Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 11 to Jun. 18, 2023.
Benjamin Morris Abrams Bali, Indonesia/ Wilmington, NC - Benjamin Morris Abrams, the fabled and fearless attorney who pursued a life of beauty and adventure abroad, died at his home on Bali, Indonesia on June 1st. He was 79.

Across roughly a hundred countries, Ben blazed and sailed a trail characterized by a blithe and unrepentant disregard for convention. He was charming and infuriating. His facility for language and the law was breathtaking-as was his capacity to stretch the former and skirt the latter.

Born in Wilmington, North Carolina on October 10th, 1943 to Harold Brandeis and Myrtle Hannah Abrams, Ben spent his childhood fishing and skiing the southeastern coast. He attended New Hanover High School before earning his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1966. After a course of study at London City College, he graduated from the New Orleans campus of Loyola University's School of Law in 1969 to become a criminal prosecutor in the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office under Janet Reno.

In the years that followed, Ben built the yacht Slow Dancer, on which he would live for nearly two decades. He practiced law in the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, New Caledonia, Thailand, and Indonesia.

But the real measure of his life lies somewhere beyond those facts. His existence verged on the mythic. At the age of 27, Ben ran arms from Bilbao, Spain to Valparaiso, Chile on a cargo ship he bought in Copenhagen. He built a discotheque called The Wow on Saipan and chased pirates off the coast of Indonesia. He played a twelve string, loved convertibles and smooth cigars, fine champagne and a good story. As for freedom, he found that on the vast ocean crossings that took him weeks from land and where he could chart his own course by the stars. Like his father before him, Ben Abrams was happiest at sea, thrilling to the wind in the rigging, squinting into the sun, and heeling hard in the deep water.

He is survived by his friend and caretaker, Megawati Rambu Anahida; his sister, Jill Abrams Gilbert; and his children: Hannah Dela Cruz Abrams, Amanda Moselle Abrams, Beauregard Abrams, Kanasta Gisele Abrams, Aaron Renne Abrams, and Kosca Abrams.

Were he to end this, Ben would say, Bon courage. He would say, God willing and if the creek don't rise. Laissez les bons temps rouler, he would say.

So let them roll.

I met Ben in the summer of 1968 when he captained our charter trip to the Bahamas following my high school graduation and our group of Explorer Scouts took our second trip there. He asked if I would help him drive back to New Orleans - as opposed to me going back to St. Louis with the scouts - and I agreed ... which led to my severance from that organization. I then took my first - but far from the last - hitchhiking adventure to get back to St. Louis.

He was a law student in New Orleans at the time and I had it the back of my mind for several years that I would also pursue that vocation, which I did and was admitted to the bar in 1977 and practiced for over 40 years.

We touched base a few times over the years and I was hoping to see him during a cruise ship stop in Bali next year, but alas, I just ran across his obituary and was sad to see that he passed two years ago.

RIP, my friend. You were one of a kind.

Ben and I dated when we were in our early 20's and I lived in Wrightsville Beach. He took me to my very first football game at UNC. But what I remember most about him was when he serenaded me on his father's boat. He played the guitar and sang to me of all things, The House of The Rising Sun. Every time I hear it I think of him. I'm so sorry he's not with us anymore.

Ben was my high school sweet heart. I first met him in the 7th grade at Chestnut Street School. He use to tease me unmercifully. We later became great friends. We double skied and sailed together on Banks Shannel. Ben was the first person to have a catamaran motor boat. it was the fastest on Wrightsville Beach. I use to love to see he and his daddy returning on the "Pelican" after three days out from the Gulf Stream fishing trip. He looked so happy helping his dad.

I am sharing two photos. The first one was taken in the summer of the 1960's outside their summer home on Wrightsville Beach. The second one was out Senior Prom at New Hanover High School in Wilmington. He was such fun to be with when we I were young. Unforgettable memories. He will not ever be forgotten.

As a kid 8-11 years old I spent 3 great summers with Ben in Wrightsville Beach - with my family visiting my dad's sister - and one week with him when he was a law student in New Orleans. Doesn't sound like much time to develop a loving friendship with a first cousin, but it was. Except for one other time when his mom died, I never saw him again in person, but we kept in touch. I admired him tremendously, and the way he lived his life without taking himself too seriously. Or so it seemed. He re-defined for me what family means, and made creating one, and then another, and another, an adventure, an example. I'll miss his humor, his smarts, his courage, his voice, and his long, long distance loving friendship.
