Benjamin Smith Green

Benjamin Smith Green, Jr. passed away at the age of 75 on November 19, 2023.

Ben was born in Paris Island, So. Carolina to the parents of Ben Green Sr. and Vivian Green. He lived in Virginia until his Marine Corp family was transferred to San Francisco. They settled in San Mateo and stayed there the rest of their lives. It was here that Ben developed his love of all sports including the San Francisco Giants, The Warriors, and the 49ers.

Ben graduated from San Mateo High School in 1966. While in high school he played football, basketball and baseball. He earned a scholarship to the University of the Pacific to play football. He graduated from U.O.P. with a degree in business, a teaching credential in Elementary Education and a Credential to teach P. E.

Ben met his future wife Judy while a student at U.O.P. They married in 1970 and were married for 53 years. In 1978 Ben and Judy were delighted to welcome their son Samuel to the family.

Ben and Judy moved to Livermore in 1972 where Ben began his career teaching P.E. to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at Mendenhall Middle School. An ideal job for a sport and dance enthusiast and a love of students in that age group. He coached many teams at Mendenhall and boys and girls basketball at Granada High School. He felt his true calling was coaching girls basketball.

Ben worked many years at Concannon Winery on weekends where he poured wine and took people on tours of the vineyards.

After 34 years of teaching, Ben retired to a daily round of golf with his many friends at Tracy Golf and Country Club.

Above all, Ben's love of friends and family knew no bounds. He was someone who never met a stranger. He loved a good conversation especially about sports and politics. He loved being with his family especially his son Samuel, daughter-in-law Candice, step-grand daughter Lexi and his beloved grandson Brendan.

There was no finer life companion than Ben. His place beside us is empty but his spirit continues to light up the lives of all who knew and loved him.
