Benjamin Edward Nemeth, of Ligonier, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 19th at the age of 33, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Ben was a 2008 graduate of Ligonier Valley High School, and attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. He resided in Pittsburgh, and worked as an Automation Testing Engineer for the Hitachi Rail Corporation since 2019. He was a respected member of his engineering team, and would often travel across the country to work on rail projects in San Francisco.
As a young man, Ben traveled to Israel with Birthright to learn more about his Jewish Identity, and he was a member of Temple Emanu-El Israel in Greensburg for many years. Ben pursued a variety of interests, including a deep love for animals, reading, hunting, cooking and gardening; however, his true passion was for the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA), in which he was known as Lord Ronan O'Conaill. Ronan was the Baronial Herald, previous Baronial Chatelain, a Kingdom Deputy Herald, the Baronial Captain of Archers, as well as an accomplished thrower, fighter, woodworker, tailor, brewer, and camp fire master. Ben/Ronan enjoyed learning to create as much as he enjoyed patiently teaching others to experience the same joy.
Ben was devoted to all of his family members, and never failed to greet everyone with a warm hug at every family event. His loving energy will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. Ben is survived by his parents Edward and Leslie Nemeth of Ligonier, PA, his sister Kaitlin and brother Jacob Nemeth, Aunts and Uncles David Weinstein, Thomas & Diane McAloon, David & Marybeth Nemeth, Dave & Patricia Polcha, James & MaryBeth Crosby, Dennis Shulock, many beloved cousins, and his sweet dog
Raven.
A private graveside service will be held this Sunday, August 27 for immediate family & close friends.
Funeral Arrangements by Kepple-Graft FuneraI Home, Inc., Greensburg. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that in Ben/Ronan’s name, you donate to SCA PA Inc - BMDL, c/o Sharon Booth, 1105 Shady Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15232, or donate to Action for Animals, P.O. I have known Ben since his early days in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA); he was shy and watchful in that beginning. I spent many hours with him and other dear friends encouraging them to find their footing. I have come to know your son as one of the finest men I have had the fortune of meeting. His heart was bigger than his whole body could contain. All that he did was full of joy and love and generosity. In his years with our organization, he grew to be a bold and fearless; a leader. I am going to miss his journey. I am going to miss his smile. I am going to miss my dear friend. Thank you for sharing the amazing man you raised with us. We are eternally in your debt.

May his memory be a blessing. I will remember him as exceedingly friendly and humble, even as he excelled at everything he set his hand or mind to, be it heraldry, throwing, archery, or a myriad other endeavors. He will be greatly missed because he shared his joy in life, and so helped many feel that same love and joy.

Ben had so many interests and so many plans, it's utterly heartbreaking to think he will not be able to see them realized. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him, and he leaves a particular hole in not only our local SCA group but the region and the organization at large. I had recently recruited him to work as staff on an event we are planning in about a year; we traveled together to a site visit and I had been so glad of the chance to get to know him a little better on that trip. Even though the planning was in its early stages, he had already made contributions that we will be grateful for as we move forward. He was enthusiastic and talented in all his pursuits, and those were well-rounded and impressively broad. May his memory forever be a blessing.

A loving friend, I was fortunate to be able to spend a good amount of time with him recently and I appreciate that small fortune. We had been making plans to practice woodcraft together and learn more about brewing, He will be leaving a very big hole in the community and I will miss him dearly.
