Benjamin Winters Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 17, 2023.
Benjamin Edward Winters passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2023. Ben was a truly special and one-of-a-kind individual and his passing left a huge space in the hearts of all those who loved him dearly. Ben was born on September 12, 1969, in Phoenix Arizona to John and Miriam Winters. Theater and music captivated Ben from an early age and he pursued both with passion. He spent lengthy periods of his childhood in character as Pinocchio and Peter from Peter and the Wolf and performed music and skits for the family with his sisters and cousins. He went on to act and sing in school plays and with the Phoenix Children's Theater in several productions. He was a talented musician throughout his life and studied guitar and viola. Ben loved to play and sing with his many friends and family any chance he got. Ben was a generous musician and played with professionals in bands and amateurs around campfires with equal passion. He was a prolific writer and filled notebooks, napkins and receipts with song lyrics, poetry and musings on life. Ben was an adventurous soul and loved sky diving in southern Arizona, remote backpacking in Yosemite and working on deep sea fishing boats in Alaska.

Ben was a devoted father and husband and raised three beautiful children with his wife, Sondra. He was excited about the arrival of his first grandchild and structured all his plans around the due date. He loved being in nature and took his family on many memorable outings and camping trips. Ben was hard working and had many interesting and challenging jobs throughout his life including commercial fishing, landscape construction, airline administration, tissue donation and corporate retail. Ben was a best friend and close confidant to countless friends and family throughout his life and was always there to support and advise those in need. To his extended family and many friends Ben was a stand in big brother, little brother, father or uncle. His kindness and gentle demeanor won over even the hardest of hearts and filled them with light. Ben had an incredible wit and intelligence and brought laughter to everyone around him. When he entered a room, it brightened. Most importantly, Ben was full of love- for his family, his friends and the community. He accepted and loved his family and friends exactly as they were. He was selfless and gave everything he had to those around him. He was a devoted son and beloved brother. He will be loved, cherished, and missed forever.

Ben was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph and his father, John. He is survived by his wife Sondra, daughters Brittany (Daniel) and Sage, son Aiden, mother Miriam, brother Chris (Yasmin), sisters Mara and Monica (Ernesto), and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews that were dear to him.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023 at 5pm at the home of Chris Winters and Yasmin Al-Mutawa- 2524 N 53rd Street, Phoenix, AZ 85008. In lieu of flowers please make donations to a charitable organization that serves the community.

I was lucky enough to have met Ben & Chris through their cousins (Matt, Eric & Molly) when they came for the Iowa summers. Ben lived with us for awhile and was an Apprentice Electrician.

All these families members are so wonderful. Ben was definitely one-of-a-kind with such a warm-hearted personality who left a mark on every single person - he didn´t know a stranger.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to all of his family. I know my heart is breaking and I believe we all have a very special, guardian angel looking over all of us.

May you RIP my Dear Friend. Been listening to some of your jam sessions - so talented.
Going to miss you, Ben

I met Ben and his family thru Scouts as our sons were similar in age. Ran into him one other time after scouts at an Adventure Race with his family. While I'm really introverted and often prefer to avoid crowds (and many people), Ben was a rare someone that I always hoped I ran into

Never enough...but what a treasure of love and generosity Ben left with us. We are fortunate to have heard him sing, to have shared his joy and felt elevated by his spirit. Though he has left, yet he will always live in the ways we remember him and hold him ins our hearts. Ben will always be with us as we continue down the road.

I worked briefly with Ben at Costco at Grant and Wilmot. What struck me was his kindness and friendly demeanor. He was indeed a light.

There is a hole in many, many hearts knowing sweet Ben is gone. He was a true friend to so many and brought endless joy to those around him. If ever there was a pure heart, it was Ben's. He never spoke a bad word about anyone and tried to see the good in all.
When I finally accepted that he was gone, a movie of memories played through my mind of our childhood spent playing ditchem in the neighborhood, kick ball in the back yard, and sleepovers filled with shenanigans. As we grew up, our friendship matured and I thought of him as someone I could lean on in hard times.
My heartfelt condolences go to Sandy, Britney, Aiden, and Sage, and the entire Winters and Jennett extended family. We all were better for having Ben in our lives. May you all be comforted by the love he showed us all, and by the beautiful memories you have of him.

The loss of Ben is a huge void in our family. We have always considered him part of our family. Some of our most precious memories have been time spent with Ben, and with his family. He is already missed. We, know he is in good hands. May his memory be eternal. We miss you Ben.

I am so fortunate to have learned so much from Ben. He showed me that kindness could be the coolest thing in the world. He was just so kind to everyone and that was his light. Ben, I always thought of you as a big brother. You as well, Chris. You guys have always been that to me. I'm so happy Megan got to know you and see that love too. I hope we can sit around a campfire and play guitar again someday.

Ben was such an amazing person. I spent a lot time with him growing up as a teenager. He was one of my best friends during that time and I cherish all of them. Many nights were spent around a campfire with his guitar. RIP Ben

I am going to miss my friend, Ben. I remember as a child running around the Winters´ home and neighborhood, playing crazy kids games with him and Chris. We were, and still are, like brothers. Growing up and going through grammar school together at St. Agnes, he was always making everyone laugh. He had that ability to disarm just about anyone. I always admired him for his talent in making music and loved his rebel hard rock attitude, like the time he played a certain Rolling Stones song at one of the St. Agnes Carnivals, classic Ben. I have so many good memories growing up together. One that stands out is a camping trip to Fossil Springs in Arizona, sometime in the 1980s. We were a bunch of happy, rowdy, goofy young dudes and you can imagine the shenanigans that followed. I am grateful for having known Ben and I will miss him greatly.

We saw first hand the way Ben cared for others.

5 years ago Ben made the effort to come all the way to rainy, cold DC to support women´s rights. He joined the march on his precious day off from work ....He won Selwa´s avid respect for that!

Ben cared - and was always gracious.

We too will miss him and are grateful for having known him.

To family amd friends who are reading this: you are encircled with people who care deeply. Lean on us.

With warmth, love, respect...Susi, Oliver, Laila and Selwa

Ben was a very special force of greatness in our lives, & he truly made the World a better place, just by being here. I believe Ben will continue to enrich our lives, with the many priceless memories & songs he left behind. And I truly believe that now he is officially the mighty guardian angel I always viewed him as.

Ben was seriously a fierce warrior, always on my side & now from the other side.

We will miss having him here physically & will honor his legacy often.

I had the pleasure of working with Ben at American Airlines. We all knew there would be laughter in our day when we would see Ben walk in. He truly was a friends to all. My oldest still remembers the yellow toy car that was given as a gift when the child was 3. Ben made a mark on all that we´re lucky enough to know him. Prayers of comfort to his family and friends.

As children, Ben went out of his way to frustrate me, but as a brother, that was his job. I think that´s why in adulthood, we had and will always have a special bond. "If I close my eyes forever, would you always stay the same?" I love you Ben!
