Bennett Lifter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 30 to Oct. 1, 2009.
LIFTER, BENNETT M., 83, of Aventura, passed away peacefully in Houston, Texas on Sunday, September 27, 2009 following a brief illness. Born in Philadelphia in 1925, the son of Daniel and Helene Lifter, he and his family migrated to Miami Beach in 1936. Lifter graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School in 1943 and enlisted in the Army Specialized Training Program. He was then transferred into the 86th Infantry "Blackhawk division" where he served in both the European and Pacific theaters of battle during the Second World War. He was awarded numerous commendations, including the bronze star for "Gallantry in Action" at the crossing of the Danube River. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania and later transferred to the University of Miami, where he earned his JD in 1950. While he practiced law for a short time, Lifter found his true calling in Real Estate and Land Development. The son of a hotelier, he carried on his father's legacy with the construction and operation of the Marco Polo Hotel and Waikiki Motel, both in Sunny Isles. He was a pioneer in North Dade and responsible for the development over 2,000 units located at the Golden Glades Interchange. He was not only successful in his business endeavors, but in all aspects of life. He thought it important to contribute to society and penned several books, including "The sky's the Limit", and was responsible for the authoring of "Miami Beach Memories". He was active in local civic affairs, serving on the Miami-Dade County Advisory Board, the South Florida Builders' Association, and was a founder and director of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau. He supported numerous organizations including the University of Miami and the United Way. He was a founder at Mt. Sinai Hospital and a contributor to several Jewish organizations including the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. He was a longstanding member of Temple Beth Shalom in Miami Beach. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends engaging in his favorite pastimes of snow skiing, boating and playing tennis. He was a stalwart family man and despite his professional achievements, took the greatest pride in his family and their accomplishments. The patriarch, he loved family get-togethers and assigned his wife and each of his children a special song from his famous list, which he would never fail to recount at every family occasion. He is survived by his devoted wife Bayla, son Aaron, daughters Nancy Wolin, Susan Zeitlin and Hilary Kates (Steven), grandchildren Samantha, Raquel, Leah, Jessica, Ben and Sam, and stepson Danny Bartell (Carla) of Denver, CO. He is also survived by his sister Adele Rubin, numerous cousins and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held Thursday, Oct. 1 at 12:30pm at Temple Beth Shalom (4144 Chase Avenue, Miami Beach, FL). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Jewish Federation of Greater Miami. Shiva following the graveside service at 19707 Turnberry Way , Aventura, FL. To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

Dear Lifter Family,

Hallelujah! We send our deepest condolences to you and your family at this time. Having only recently learned of Mr. Lifter's passing, we felt compelled to let you know what a good man he was to our mother, Louise Ogden. No one can know how many times he helped this single woman and her children when she had no one else to turn to. Louise referred to him as "her father" and she had a great deal of affection for him. And we believe, he for her. (smile) We want to send you this note of thanks for all his many kindnesses to Louise, and to us, both personally and vicariously, because in his help to our mother, he helped us. Please thank his kind associates again for their kindness at her funeral this past March and to all of his associates, thank you. Her passing came at a great time of personal loss and Mr. Lifter's contributions consoled us in our time of need. It is our hope that the God of Israel Who Keeps Covenant With His People blesses not only Mr. Lifter's family for generations, but that Mr. Lifter is also sitting at God's table eating with him. God, He is God and there is other! Thank you for the time your father gave, and if you had any part of his kindnesses to the Timpson or Ogden family, God bless you and keep you. May He, the God of Israel, forever be blessed and may He, forever bless His people. Amen.

With Love and Sincerity,
Michael and Edwena Timpson
our children,
Gabrielle and Michael, The Younger

Bayla,

We were so sorry to hear of the passing of Bennett. He was always so wonderful to talk with when we would get together at parties and social affairs. We always discussed his love of boating and traveling. Our deepest sympathy to you and your family. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do to help you out and don't hesitate to call on us. He was a great guy and so helpful to us all the time when we would ask him different real estate questions. He will truly be missed.

I am very sad to hear of Mr Lifter's passing. I worked for him for 3 years at the Marco Polo Tennis Center in the late 70's. I had the utmost respect for the man-a towering presence with a gentle charisma. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Bayla and family,
an era is gone. I think back of when I met him through Sheldon (Neuman) and then Shel passed away (almost ten years ago) and then Tom Gerard and now Bennett.. how sad it is to reflect on the passing of the years. Bennett's smile, warmth and quiet sense of humor will always be with us. I'll be thinking of you. Be well.

I have wonderful memories of growing up with Uncle Bennett as part of my family's life - and the very special relationships we had with the Lifter family, especially my childhood buddies Danny and Nancy. All the years and miles that have come between those days have not lessened the deep fondness I feel for all of you. We will miss Uncle Bennett but hold onto wonderful memories always. Sending lots of love, sympathy and virtual hugs.

My Condolences, We all will miss His smile and his personality. Every thing he did was very organzized and clearly thought out. He never forgot about G-d and bussiness...everything he did. He was great asset to the community.

His book The Skys the Limit was an inspiration to many young Jewish entreperenurs in the Real Esate bussiness.

I will truly miss seeing him during passover seder.
Regards to the Lifter fammily (Adele's Grandson) ;

Daddy, I will miss you so much. You were a terrific father and I am so lucky that you are the person who guided me in this world. I will always miss getting your take on things, and having all the birthday's and occasions memories close by with the little touches you always made. You had a great sense of style and talents that will be so missed. You did things with lots of thought always and knew what to expect so you would not confused with the ultimate result. Dear Bayla,Aaron, Nancy,Susan, and Hilary..
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have so many fond memories of my cousin Bennett when I was growing up and in Miami on several family visits. A kind man with a close sense of family.I loved my Aunt Helene and Uncle Dan, and I still have the black pearl ring that they gave me when I was 16 years old. Your Dad and his family have always been a part of their Chicago family and especially my Dad. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I wish I could be there with all of you but I am leaving the country and time is too short to get there and back. I love you, stay strong. Cousin Shelly
