Bennie Mae Ferguson Underwood of Waynesville passed away peacefully Friday at the Haywood Lodge surrounded by her family after an extended illness. Bennie was born May 30, 1931 to the Late Andrew McKinley and Ida Mae McElroy Ferguson. She retired from American Enka, Inc. following 25 years of service. She was a member of the Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church. She enjoyed flowers and working in her yard. She was a special Mother and Grandmother who loved her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Monte Clifford Underwood who passed away in 2004, a brother John Robert Ferguson and one sister Sara Lee Green. She is survived by one son, Sam. M. Underwood and his wife, Nancy of Waynesville, two brothers Charles Ferguson and his wife Claudia of Lake Junaluska, Carlyle Ferguson and his wife Marie of Waynesville, seven sisters Margaret Williams of Candler, NC Betty Moody of Clyde, NC, Helen Davis and her husband Lawrence of Waynesville, Ruth Presnell and her husband Bobby of Waynesville, Annette Best and her husband Jimmy of Noble, OK, Maxine Bradshaw and her husband Jimmy of Waynesville, and Irene Noland and her husband Joe of Clyde, two grandchildren, Mackenzie Stack and her husband Charlie of Winston Salem and Mathew Blake Underwood of Waynesville. Services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, September 2nd in the Chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Reverend Jay Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 PM Sunday, September 2nd at the funeral home. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers will be Earl Green, Larry Davis, Martin Clark, Mike Ferguson, Andy Presnell, Greg Presnell, Jeff Ferguson, Jimmy Bradshaw, Davis Ferguson, George Ferguson, and Johnny Bruce Ferguson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ratcliffe Cove Baptist church at 1300 Ratcliffe Cove Road, Waynesville, NC 28786 or First Baptist Church of Waynesville, Roofing Fund, 100 South Main Street Waynesville, NC 28786. At other times the family will receive friends at the home of Sam and Nancy Underwood, 1405 Oakdale Road, Waynesville, NC 28786. Bennie,
I know that you are the happiest that you have ever been since you are reunited with Monte and Our Lord. However, you will be truely missed here. May God bless the family with comfort.
