BERNARD CHAJKOWSKI Obituary
BERNARD H., SR.
Of Shaler (formerly of Knoxville and Lawrenceville), died Friday, June 21, 2013, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, surrounded by his loving children and family. He was the son of the late Bernard J. and Mary (Salmon) Chajkowski. He was the most loving dad of his daughter, Sue Ellen Chajkowski; and his son, Bernard H. Chajkowski, Jr.; and loving stepfather of Mark Stewart and Kelly (Stewart) Bechtold; and was known as Pap-pap to his grandchildren, Amber and Jenna Bechtold. After graduation from Hilltop Catholic High School, Bernard served in the U.S. Army receiving honorable discharge after which he became a Firefighter for the Local #1 in Downtown Pittsburgh, serving our city with 25 years of faithful and dedicated service, retiring from Engine House #6 in Lawrenceville. He was an active member of the I.A.T.S.E. Local #3 Stagehands. Bernard was a generous and loving man well known for going above and beyond to help anyone in need. His stories and knowledge of life as well as service to others will live on in our hearts forever. He had a great love for music. He enjoyed singing "You are my sunshine" to his children. A collector of many things, he also enjoyed browsing for "great buys" at local thrift shops. Bernard is also survived by his siblings, Mary Ellen Chajkowski, Kathy (Bob) Hoonhout, Tish Chajkowski, Tom Chajkowski, John Chajkowski, Joseph (Nina) Chajkowski, Paul (Kim) Chajkowski; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the D'ALESSANDRO FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY LTD., Butler at 46 Sts., Lawrenceville, on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Joseph Parish, 342 Dorseyville Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15215, on Monday at 10 a.m.

Bernie and I worked together at # 1 Engine and Truck Company. He was a good firefighter and a good man. His passing is a loss for all of us. I'm sorry I was not able to come to the funeral home in person and express my condolences.
