Bernard Conlin Obituary

Published by Worcester Telegram & Gazette from Dec. 5 to Dec. 8, 2019.
Bernard J. Conlin, 66

NORTHBOROUGH - Bernard J. Conlin, 66, of Northborough, died Thursday, December 5, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

He leaves his spouse and best friend of 31 years, Clifford Vera; his mother, Marguerite "Peggy" (O'Connell) Conlin of Shrewsbury, a sister Kathryn Maguire and her husband Richard of Worcester, two brothers, Walter Conlin and his wife Brenda of Shrewsbury, and Dr. Daniel Conlin and his spouse Dr. Robert Elsen of San Francisco.

His father, Walter M. Conlin, passed away in 2001.

In addition, he leaves his nieces and nephews: Charles Maguire and wife Erin of Walpole, Martin Maguire of Worcester, Caitlyn Palo and her husband Vasil of Walpole, Megan Conlin of Shrewsbury, and Michael and Matthew Conlin-Elsen of San Francisco.

Bernard was born in Worcester on December 19, 1952. He was a graduate of Assumption Prep, the College of the Holy Cross and Suffolk University School of Law. After graduating from Suffolk, he began his long and distinguished law career in Worcester, eventually joining a practice with partners Mary Italiano and AI San Clemente at 84 Park Avenue in Worcester, where he worked for 43 years until his recent illness.

Bernard loved spending time in Florida, at his home in Delray Beach, where he had many wonderful friends. You could find him walking and shopping along Atlantic Avenue or soaking up the sun at the pool with friends. He also enjoyed spending time on Cape Cod at his home in Harwichport where he loved to walk, head to the beach, and spend great times relaxing with family and friends. Bernard was a world traveler who also never missed an opportunity to visit a museum or attend an art show.

Bernard brought lots of joy and fun to any gathering and made friends wherever he went, always going out of his way to listen and learn as much as he could about those he met. He always had a story or something humorous to brighten your day when you talked with him. He had a huge heart and was generous in so many ways, but most notably in spending time with and being thoughtful of those he cared about.

Bernard supported and was involved in many organizations. He was member of the Worcester County Bar Association for 44 years. He served on the boards of directors for Salisbury Singers and AIDS Project Worcester.

Bernard's family wishes to thank the caregivers who helped him battle his illness over the last few months including Dr. Morris Millman, Dr. Sonali Harchandani and Dr. William Walsh. They would also like to especially thank Dr. T.J. Fitzgerald and his wife Sue for being wonderful neighbors and for the time and care they spent with Bernard.

Calling hours are Sunday, December 8, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Monday, December 9, from the funeral home, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernard's memory may be made to The UMass-Memorial Foundation to support its Cancer Center, 333 South St., Shrewsbury, MA 01545 (UMassMemorial.org).

Years later, the things I remember most clearly about Bernie, whom I haven't seen in many years: his smile, his positive personality, charisma, and never a bad word to say about anyone. We need more Bernies!

I never needed a lawyer before in my life till I made the mistake to drink and drive... I knew I messed up but wanted to go through the process with a lawyer by my side... He was everything I expected and more... Guided me through the process while being kind and genuine... For years afterwards I told those in need how helpful he was by standing next to me being the professional he was. From a clients perspective - he will be missed...

A year has passed and Bernie’s name is always a topic of conversation- how missed he is. Always friendly to the nth degree, humorous and happy, thoughtful and considerate, and a friend who would extend himself to help out anyone he could help out. Cliff and Bernie were blessed to have each other.

Sorry to respond so late.
I met Bernie as a freshman at HC. He had a small kid on his shoulders, and two more at each side. Bernie, as a 17 year old freshman had founded the Student Program for Urban Development at Holy Cross. (SPUD) One of those SPUD programs was the Big Brother (later Big Sister) Program. This program is (to my knowledge) still in existence today at HC. For years this program was student run, and provided help to hundreds of kids.
Bernie always typified for me what Holy Cross could and should be. RIP

As a classmate and friend of Bernie at Holy Cross, I extend my sympathy and condolences to Bernie's family and friends. I will always have clear memories of Bernie's wit, intelligence, style, and smile. 45 years since I've seen Bernie, I can say Bernie, you and the twinkle in your eyes will be missed by all, you are a class act. May you rest in peace, and join the angels.

Cliff, My deepest sympathy for your loss.

When I first moved to the Cape, I didn't really know many people so I introduced myself to Bernie because when I listened to him with his friends on the beach he always made me laugh. Of course, he took me under his wing introduced me to all his friends and made me feel welcome.

He was a wonderful, kind and generous person and he will be missed.

Cliff and the Conlin family, Bernie will be sadly missed. As neighbors for many years on Freeman Street in Harwich Port, Bernie would always stop by on his way to the beach and have us rolling with laughter with his incredible wit. His travels provided so many stories and Bernie told them well. He followed the exploits of our kids and grandkids and never missed a chance to point out the peeling paint on the house but with kindness and humor. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I am so sorry for your loss. Bernie was one of the first attorneys that I worked for at Fusaro & Fusaro while still in high school until I married and moved to Maine in 1981. I always remember Bernie being so full of life. When my Dad passed away in 2009, Bernie came to my Dad's service, and when I lost my Mom this past April of this year, he again came to my Mom's service. His attendance at my Mom and Dad's services will never be forgotten. He touched my heart. I was saddened to learn of his passing.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Bernie since Blessed Sacrament. When I began practicing law in Worcester as a young prosecutor I would frequently run into Bernie at the old courthouse. Every time I saw Bernie he greeted me with a big smile, a hug and wanted to know how I was doing. He was genuinely interested in what was going on in my life and how my family was doing. He truly was a special person and the Worcester Bar and community lost one of their great ones. You will be missed Bernie!

Dear Cliff and the Conlin Family,

I was so shocked and saddened to receive a call Bernie had passed away.
I met Bernie in the late 70's and had the privilege of being
a friend and a client. Bernie and Cliff helped me out tremendously with a legal issue while I started my career in CA.
There was no one funnier. I will never forget my trip with him to Columbia in 1981. We had so many laughs. He was great with parents... my father got a real kick out of Bernie's suit closet...of course cedar and almost the size of a men's shop. He loved his shopping.
I am across country but we stayed in touch and always picked up where we left off.
Rest In Peace my friend.
