Bernard Cooper Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 15, 2022.
Dr. Bernard Cooper passed away November 10, 2022, in Palo Alto California, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 94.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Shirley Cooper; his children, Geoffrey and wife Marianne, Lorne and wife Nancy, and Stephanie and husband Mervyn; his six grandchildren; and by two great-grandchildren.

He was just 17 and a Royal Canadian Airforce Cadet in high school, when WW II ended. His descendants are grateful he was able to serve his country in more peaceful ways.

Dr. Cooper was a high honors graduate of Westmount High School, and McGill University, becoming the first of his family to attend University. He graduated with high honors from McGill Medical School, and then interned at the Royal Victoria Hospital, did a residency at Johns Hopkins, and was a research fellow at Harvard Medical school's Thorndike Institute.

Returning to Montreal, he became a full professor at McGill Medical school, where his research was in B12, Folic Acid, and contributed to the treatments of leukemia. He was also head of Hematology at the Royal Victoria Hospital for many years, where he was part of the team that conducted the first bone marrow transplant for treating Leukemia in Canada.

Even in academics, he was always a doctor and consultant to the many members of the family, as we dealt with medical problems, simple or severe, to ourselves, our parents, and our children.

At the age of 65, he retired from academics and took up a medical practice in California, where he practiced for ten years, specializing in Oncology.

He was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather, and he will be missed.

My heartfelt condolences to you all; I remember Bernard from his time in St Albans when he visited with his sister Celia and her family. He was a good brother and uncle to his nieces.
May he start his next adventure....
