Bernard Goldberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 28 to Aug. 29, 2010.
Bernard "Bernie" Goldberg August 27, 2010 Bernard Bernie Goldberg, 84, died peacefully at his home early Friday morning. Born in Rome, NY, he was a lifetime resident of Syracuse. He was a graduate of Nottingham High School and attended Princeton University until he was called to duty to serve in the U.S. Army, in the infantry, at the age of 19. He landed in the south of France, fighting through the end of the war. He crawled through France and Germany as a mortar gunner. He was awarded the bronze star in Paris on V-E day. After the war, Bernie returned to Syracuse to continue his education, graduating from Syracuse University in 1948. In 1947, he and his brother, Arnold, founded Raymour Furniture Company, Inc. For the past 20 years, Bernie served as chairman of the board of Raymour & Flanigan Furniture Company, the largest furniture retailer in the Northeast. In 1971 he was president of Temple Adath Yeshurun, the first president to serve at the new and current location on Kimber Road. Bernie was dedicated to his community, actively involved in numerous community and civic organizations. He was particularly proud of receiving the American Heritage Award from the Anti-Defamation League, his citation as a board member of the New York State Division of Human Rights, and as a founding trustee of the Syracuse Jewish Community Foundation of Central New York. Survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma; their children, grandchildren and great- grandson, Marti (Harold) Rifkin and David Rifkin, Samantha and Jeremy Garelick, and Zion Garelick; Neil (Robin) Goldberg and Seth, Shira, Adam and Miriam; Jerry (Sharon) Goldberg and Richard and Michelle; and Steven (Sondra) Goldberg and Dana, Rebecca, and Kara. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. today at Temple Adath Yeshurun. Friends may visit with the family from 1:30 to 3 p.m. today, immediately prior to the service, at the temple, 450 Kimber Road, Syracuse. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery. Contributions in Bernie's memory may be made to Temple Adath Yeshurun. Shiva will be observed at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Neil and Robin. Sisskind Funeral Service LLC 3175 E. Neil, Steve, and Family,

I was employed by Raymours Furniture back in the early 80's and during that time had plenty of exposure to your Dad. I can vividly recall a particular experience when he looked at me over the top of his glasses, put his hand on my shoulder and said, "son, listen to me and you'll be a much brighter person". I did, and I am.

Neil & Steve, as well as Michael and the entire Goldberg Family..... It is with great sadness that I heard of Bernie's passing. My wife and I wanted to attend the services, but were unable to. It would have been great to see all of you, even under such sad circumstances. Even to this day, after all these years, I look upon you as family. My nearly 20 years with the company has left me with fond memories and a wealth of retail education and experience. I frequently relate many of my experiences with Raymour & Flanigan to those around me.
Bernie ("Mr. Bernard") taught me alot about the business from the ground up. I still harp on my sales staff to turn lamp shades around so the seam is in the back (I do this at home, as well as my wife, who is an interior designer) Bernie taught me that!! He also taught me to sell a customer what we have, no what they want. I got good at it and kept inventory moving and getting a commission check sooner as well.
Who could forget the shoes that Bernie wore at the Seneca Mall Showroom back in the day! Thank God for the squeaking noise they made on that tile floor which gave us all warning of his approach.
I learned so much, from so many in those years, and I can honestly say that it has never left me. I continue to teach as I was taught. Bernie, Arnie, and Bob McKenzie may have passed, but their memories and accomplishments will live on forever.
Neil, Steve, and Mike.... it goes without saying that all of your hard work can be measured by the growth and success throughout the years. I'm not only proud of my years spent with the company, but like to think I helped in some small way in the early growing years.
Furniture is my life. I have no regrets. Retail is in my blood, and Bernie is embedded in my memory
With Loving Respect,
John E. Lewis Jr.

Dear Neil, Robin & family,
I was sorry to hear of your loss. I didn't know your father but if he was as kind and generous as all of you have been to my mother these past years he will be a great loss to the community. My guess is that my mom and your dad are swapping stories about all of you right now. My mother talked of your family often and would tell us how much she enjoyed your visits to Kay's.

Dear Neal, Steve and family,
My deepest sympathy for the loss of your dad. He was truly a gentleman and I will always remember him. As a new rep starting out in the business several years ago, he was always cordial and respectful to me when I called on him and I respected him a great deal for that quality. He and Arnie were truly a part of the "old guard" in the industry, and we will miss him dearly. My deepest condolences.

Neil and family. Sorry to hear of your fathers passing. I'm sure that you
all saw him as a great man. I had the pleasure of working for Raymours back in the mid nineties. You can be proud of his service to
his country, as a WWII veteran, who, along with my father, fought in europe. God keep you and your family in peace.
