Bernard Larkin Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 15, 2024.
Bernard Martin "Marty" Larkin Jr., 72, of Williamsburg, VA, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2024, in the loving care of his family. He was born on July 9, 1951, in Elmira, NY to Bernard "Bernie" Larkin Sr. and Terrie Larkin. He graduated from Ithaca High School in upstate New York, where he was a member of the Ithaca High basketball team, winner of the Southern Tier Championship during his senior year. Marty was also a talented pitcher for the high school baseball team.

Together with his former wife, Susan Larkin, Marty built a life in Williamsburg that would revolve around his three boys. He coached them in youth sports and cheered loudly from the sidelines. He enjoyed planning adventures and travels for the family, often by surprise. There was camping at Sherando Lake, skiing in Wintergreen, windsurfing in Sandbridge, and a wide variety of state parks in Virginia. He even managed a trip to Arizona to hike the Grand Canyon with his 3 boys. As his sons matured, he supported them as they built careers of their own, for which he took great pride.

Marty spent 50+ years in the construction industry. Often working alone, he could concoct ingenuous solutions to meet a variety of unique requests. From bathroom remodels and kitchen renovations to custom new homes, Marty's attention to detail and craftsmanship was always evident. Marty took extreme pride in his ability to fix anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He concluded his construction career with his middle son, Ross, by his side.

Marty will always be remembered for his kind and generous nature. He was passionate about live music, spending time on the beach, cooking, fishing, and playing golf, especially when one of his boys joined him. He was an avid and lifelong runner, participating in hundreds of races over the years. He also enjoyed trying new tequilas and was always quick to pick up the tab.

Marty was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard "Bernie" Larkin Sr. and Terrie Larkin, and his older brother, Timothy Larkin. He is survived by his sister, Mary Bunkley and her husband, Butch; brother, Steve Larkin and Wendy; and brother, Michael Larkin and Amy. He is also survived by his former wife, Susan Larkin of Williamsburg, and his dear companion Peg Lockwood. He was lucky enough to find love with Peg during his last years of life, and along with his family, she managed to keep him smiling and comfortable until the very end. He is also survived by his in-laws, whom he maintained a strong relationship with, and cared for deeply, along with many nieces and nephews from both sides of the family. Lastly, he is survived by his dear sons, Todd (and Allison, whom he walked down the aisle) Ross, and Scott; as well as beautiful grandsons, Reid and Tanner, who will forever cherish their "Pap-Pap."

There will be a celebration to honor Marty's life in the coming months.

Very sad to hear this news. Marty and I were starters on that championship basketball team. He embodied all you could ask for in a teammate... smart, talented and unselfish. Many a tear now being shed by the IHS Class of 1969 as our friend begins his journey to the spirit world!
