Bernard Lucido Obituary

Published by The Berkshire Eagle on Dec. 9, 2020.
Bernard J. Lucido, 68, of Las Vegas, NV passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Nov. 9, 2020, at Spectrum Health at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, MI while visiting his wife Laura's family. Bernie was born on July 20, 1952, in Pittsfield, MA, the son of the late Dominic R. and Grace N. (Giacco) Lucido.

Bernie was a 1970 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Following his graduation, he completed a one-year computer analyst program in Hartford, CT. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force (1971-1975). Following his first service enlistment, Bernie went on to complete a two-year Nuclear Engineering Program at Lowell Technological Institute. In 1977, he reenlisted in the Air Force and completed his 10-year career as a staff sergeant. During his Air Force career, he served at Westover Air Base, MA, Lackland Air Base, TX, Luke Air Base, AZ, and Nellis Air Base, NV.

During Bernie's second service enlistment, he also held a part-time job with a regional banking institute, in his "spare time", and using his skills, Bernie wrote the original program for the PLUS ATM debit card system which is still used today. Bernie was an information technology professional with more than 40 years of experience. At the time of his death, he was employed with the City of North Las Vegas for over 17 years, holding the position of senior business systems analyst.

On Sept. 21, 1985, Bernie married Laura (Wahl) Lucido, who predeceased him, unexpectedly, on Oct. 23, 2020. Bernie and Laura celebrated 35 years of marriage this past September.

Enjoying rocketry, Bernie built some awesome recreational rockets. He was particularly proud of "Big Red" and "Mikey Boy". He was a member of Tripoli (Vegas) Rocketry Association, Inc., and held the title of Prefecture. Bernie was also a loyal member of The Lions Club in Las Vegas and the Moose Lodge in Pahrump, NV.

Bernie was an outstanding son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend. His family was of the utmost importance to him, and he cherished every moment he spent with them. He always enjoyed sitting around the table with family and friends, sharing stories and a good glass of wine. He even tried his hand at making wine. He loved his family vacations to Northern Nevada, Michigan, Massachusetts and Maine. Bernie and Laura enjoyed camping in their 5th wheel at Jean and Delamar dry lake beds for rocket launches, as well as in Pahrump, NV and Northern Arizona.

Bernie was predeceased by his parents and his beloved wife, Laura. Survivors include his four children, Constance L. Lucido of Carson City, NV, Bernard J. Lucido III, of Carson City, Joseph A. Lucido of Sparks, NV, and Rachel V. (Lucido) Abolafia of Las Vegas; twelve grandchildren, Marissa, Kali, Brianna, Kaelyn, Logan, Rylee, Abigail, Nathan, Zachary, Kaylee, Ainsley, and Hayden; two great grandchildren, Kairi and Ronan; one sister, Mary L. Herrick (husband Michael) of Pittsfield, MA, and their children, Michael Jr., Christopher, Matthew, Lisa (Herrick) Lovell, and Elizabeth. He also leaves his former wife Susan (Jones) Thornton of Sparks, NV.

Bernie was well over six feet tall. When he returned to Pittsfield in 2010 to be at his father's bedside, the in-home Hospice staff referred to Bernie as "the Gentle Giant". Bernie was loved by all that had the pleasure of meeting and knowing him, and he will be dearly missed.

A celebration of life will be held late July 2021 in Las Vegas. Those who wish to remember Bernie in a special way may make gifts in his memory to Adam's Place in Las Vegas, Nev https://adamsplacelv.org/support-us/donate/

This is a beautiful tribute to Uncle Bernie. Our deepest condolences again. Uncle Bernie was a wonderful person that will be sorely missed in our lives. We cherish all of the summer weeks we’ve been able to spend with him at the beach in Maine and the many family dinners we’ve shared together over the years. I pray we all continue to stay in touch as a family, sharing our lives and stories with each other, as I know he would want us to do. Love and prayers to everyone. He was my godfather; and has always held a special place in my heart. I cherish each memory of our times together. Love to all. ❤
