Dear Mrs. Michaels,
Dr. Michaels was my pediatrician from the time I was a baby, possibly until the time I went to college. When I was in college, my mother told me that when I was about three years old I contracted a rare virus. The way she told me the story, she attributed him with saving my life. He was such a kind and thoughtful man. Glad to have known him. I think of him often still.

When I was only a few weeks old, other doctors told my parents I had no possibility of living. My father did not accept this and sought out Dr Michaels. I was given a 50 50 chance of living if I survived the next 48 hours. I am now 51 years old , so I guess it worked out. I heard this story many times growing up, but only recently learned the name of the doctor. I am obviously thankful to Dr Michaels life and dedication to his patients and medicine. I regret not learning his name sooner and having the opportunity to thank him directly. My condolences and thanks to Dr Michaels family.

Dear Mrs.Michaels,
Dr. Michaels was my doctor and my brother's doctor in the 60's and 70's. I think all of Stanton Heights and possibly the whole city of Pgh. went to Dr. Michaels. I remember always being afraid to go to the doctor until he came in and made me laugh. What a wonderful doctor and person he was. If I had lived in Pgh., I'm sure he would have been my children's doctor. May your beautiful family and friends and wonderful memories carry you through this time.

Phyllis and I were out of the country when Dr. Michaels died. He was a gentle man in all its meanings. A kinder man never walked the face of this earth. He will be deeply missed by literally thousands of his patients and their family, all of whom considered him a friend. Our deepest sympathy, Gene Strassburger and Phyllis Kitzerow.

It was very sad to read in the Post Gazette that Dr. Bernie Michaels had died. Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities has lost a very compassonate, caring person and one who was always there for parents and their children.
He was my children's pediarician in the 60's & 70's and gave such excellent medical advice; and also just good common sense advice on raising children..he was indeed, the Mr. Rogers of pediatricians as someone stated in the Guest Book.
My deepest sympathy to the entire family and a thank you to the family for sharing such a wonderful person with so many who were his patients. You are all in my thoughts and prayers at this time as you deal with the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Decades later, I remember Dr. Michaels' beautiful way of telling me difficult truths in the kindest possible manner. He taught us that, no matter how old we were, we deserved to be treated with respect. He was the Mr. Rogers of pediatricians. I've lost my mother, my aunt, and my best friend in the past five months. I view Dr. Michaels' passing as one more goodbye to a loved one. Deepest sympathy to your entire family...

My family was saddened to learn of Dr. Michaels death. Dr. Michaels was the pediatrician for my four children from 1960 until my youngest son turned 18 in 1989. He not only knew his patients well, he knew their parents. If I called during the morning call time, he knew that he had to see my child. He knew me that well.
He was also responsible for guiding me to a physician for my thyroid problem. He noticed my neck and started checking it and told me I needed to see someone. That's how observant and good he was. There was another time when my husband needed to see an ear doctor because of a problem after being at the beach. We called all the names he gave us and none of them could see him. So, Dr. Michaels told my husband, Tony, to come in to see him and he cleared out his ears. The world has lost a tremendous physician and person.

I remember "Uncle" Bernie, who was my mother's pediatrician as well as mine, from as far back as I can go. I am in my own practice now and hope that I have his demeanor and his smile when I see my pediatric patients. I will miss him - both for what I remember from childhood and from seeing him at Grand Rounds at Children's well into his retirement, still learning.

Dr Michaels was a wonderful pediatrician with an incredible knowledge base. I was a pediatric partner of his son, Bob Michaels, who is also a pediatrician in Boston, . Bob would tell me story after story that illustrated his father's incredible diagnostic skills and endless knowledge base. Bob is in my opinion the best pediatrician in Boston and he was always trying to live up to the model his father set. I knew Dr Michaels through our interactions at AAP meetings and around his time with Bob and his family here in Boston. He was an incredibly gracious person who was a wonderful grandfather. My thoughts go out to his entire family in this time of sadness and loss.

I did not know Bernie as a doctor. I knew Bernie as the wonderful husband of my good friend, Pauline. I recall the first time I met him . . .he said he couldn't help falling in Love with Pauline since she had such great legs! I loved him because he was a true loving husband to Pauline. May God give her the strength to face life without him.

Our 7 children were so fortunate to have Dr. Michaels as their pediatrician! With kindness and humor, he cared for them through all the trials and illnesses of childhood, always respectful of our concerns.
