Bernard WILHELM Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Nov. 12, 2016.
WILHELM, Dr. Bernard
Dr. Bernard Wilhelm of Emerald Park, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully last Saturday, November 5, 2016 at William Albert House at the age of 89. His death touches many friends in Europe and North America. He was a true gentleman whose wit, charm, insight and an ability to tell a good story endeared him to all. In 1967, Bernard answered the call to teach French and American literature at the University of Saskatchewan in Regina where he headed the Bilingual Centre. He established this institute as a hub of French academic and cultural activity for many years at the University of Regina. He inspired a rising generation of English-speaking students to learn French and invited French-speaking students from Quebec, Belgium, France and Switzerland to learn English while discovering the West. Bernard adopted satellite and fibre-optic telecommunication technologies to connect and build long-lasting relationships between French-speaking communities across Canada. He also pioneered distance education in French at the University of Regina. His many writings, books, radio broadcasts and the numerous engagements he made as president of the France-Canada association serve as a long-lasting testimony to the deep passion and commitment he held about keeping French thriving in this province while bridging cultural gaps. Bernard was predeceased by his wife Rita in 2015. He is survived by his daughter Jane in Geneva. His son Pierre (Mariela) and children Gabriel, Daniel and Jeremy live in Edmonton and daughter Natalia in British Columbia. His other son, Christophe (Helene) and children Elise and Thomas live in Paris. A funeral ceremony will be held in Bernard's honour on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Paroisse St. Jean-Baptiste, 2517 25th Avenue in Regina. In lieu of sending gifts or flowers, please consider donating to the William Albert House recreation fund at 333 Emerald Park Road, Emerald Park, SK S4L 1C9, ph. 306- 347-9900.

I(Louis) witness his admnistrative and implementation skills in developing programs and services for both the Francophone and Anglophone communities as a member of the Bilingual Center Advisory Board and subsequently in the late 1990's when he was back to direct the Language institute.
He was a passionate promoter of French language and culture. He was able to effectively create and implement programs and services. We were fortunate to have had his talents and skills when we needed them during the developmental era of French language and cultural programs..
I will always remember his accomphlishments and his many talents
