Bernice Kelly Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 15, 2010.
Bernice Beatrice Bennett Kelly was born February 7, 1929 in Camaguey, Cuba to the parents of Aaron S. Bennett and Lillian Maude Levy Bennett. Bernice was one of nine children and the youngest daughter. Shortly thereafter the family relocated to Jamaica, West Indies where Bernice was raised. She was dedicated as a child to the mission of the Salvation Army May 8, 1929 by her parents. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior as a young woman.

Bernice Bennett met and married Arthur James Kelly in Spanish Town, Jamaica in 1954. The couple emigrated to the United States and resided in Chicago, Illinois. To this union was born Denise Yvonne Kelly and Grace Patricia Kelly. The family then relocated to New York City in 1959. Later to this union the couple was blessed with an additional daughter Toya Angelique Kelly.

Bernice Kelly was a pastor's wife, a devoted mother, talented homemaker and gifted cook. She graduated from the Orchid School of Beauty Culture on June 25th, 1961 where she mastered the art of Cosmetology. She later obtained her certificate of training as a nurse's aide in 1974 from New York City Health and Hospital Corporation and was employed at Byrd S. Coler memorial hospital until her retirement in 1986. In 1980 she obtained her high school equivalency diploma from the University of the State of New York Education Department.

In 1988 Bernice Kelly relocated from New York City to Meridian, MS. She resided with her daughters Denise and Grace where she played a fundamental and integral role in the rearing and raising of her 5 grandchildren. She was greatly loved and revered by them all.

She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Meridian until her departure from this life.

Bernice was a warm, caring generous and very family oriented person. Yet many young people in the community flocked to her for her guidance, listening ear and wisdom. She was affectionately referred to as "Gerber" by her grandchildren.

One Early Sunday Morning September 12, 2010, she departed this life and was welcomed into the loving arms of God our Father where she now reaps her reward. The pain of illness and the tears of suffering are no more. She has left a legacy of strength and perseverance, faith, love, and determination for all who know and love her.

She is preceded in death by her parents Aaron and Lillian Bennett and brothers, Cecil, Alphonson, Ivan, Winston and Reginald Bennett. She leaves to cherish her memory two sisters Elecia Cox and Gay Bennett of Miami, Fl. One brother Atlee Bennett (Barbara Bennett) of the Bronx, New York. As well as, her three daughters Denise Kelly Hawkins (Bo Gary Hawkins) of Collinsville, Mississippi, Grace Kelly-Evans (Jerome Evans) of Collinsville, Mississippi, Toya Angelique Kelly of the Bronx, New York.

Her grandchildren Christopher Marc Kelly Powell, Benjamin Sean Kelly Powell, Kelly Vanessa Nelson, Jeremy Michael Kelly Evans, Jonathan (JoJo) Frank Kelly Evans and Mitzi Channel and a multitude of nieces, nephews and loved ones.

My guardian angel,

Thank you so much for the spiritual encouragement gram. Although I miss so much to just call u up physically for a listening ear, I always feel your presence around me; you have become my better conscience. Life is so much better and have learned to hold on the Gods word and always listen to the small voices that always point me in the right direction. Miss u dearly, LOVE ALWAYS.

Hi mommy,

It's been one of those lonely feeling days without you. Just took a walk to de-stress a little. It is approaching the one year anniversary of your flight out of here. Yesterday was one year since we lost grandma Kelly. I recently learned that Aunt Rita has made the journey over there as well.
My heart is heavy right now, as I suppose is to be expected.
Just missing and loving you always. Don't have too much fun. Save a little action for the rest of us.

My Love Always,
Gracie

Hi mommy,

Everything must change. Nothing stays the same. I have never really grasped that truth until now. Life on this side changes constantly, invariably and inevitably. Looking at our picture gallery portrays change so well.

Part of change is adjusting to life on this side without you. Thank God for the memories.

Missing you terribly today. Loving and remembering you always.

Hi mommy,

It's been a difficult few weeks as March was the anniversary month when you got ill and were never really able to return home for more than a day. One year ago. It's hard to believe. I'm missing you more than ever and I wish you were here to celebrate some happy times coming up in the very near future. Anyway, I know that you are where you are supposed to be. God knows best, but my heart aches for you. I know that in time, God will heal my heart and I will have better good days than the not so good days,

Just want you to know how much you are loved, missed and thought about.

Enjoy the Glory of God's presence and say hey to all our loved ones who have left this side of life. We continue to ask for your guidance and intercession.

Loving my mama always,
Gracie

LOVE YOU VERY MUCH!!!!

Hi mommy,

I've had a difficult couple of weeks just missing you so badly. I spend alot of time in my head with all sorts of memories flooding my mind. I guess it just comes and goes as I take one day at a time. I'm glad I can at least journal my feelings to you when it gets rough.
Just wanted to touch bases with you. I know you're fully aware and I feel the presence of your love and protection. Behave, but have fun!

Loving you always,
Gracie

Hi Mommy,
I'm wearing your ST. Christopher necklace it makes me feel closer to you.I miss you so much my only consolation is to know that to be absent from the body is to be present with Lord. I look forward to the day when you and I will be together. Why is it we always have to lose the ones we love before we realize just how important they are to us. I feel a void in my life and I know its you I only hope you know how much you are missed and how much I love you. I wasn't prepared for you to leave me sometimes I feel so lost but I guess thats how it is when you lose a part of yourself.

Loving you always'

December 29, 2010

Hi Mommy,

Well I suppose you and Sandy just picked up where you left off. Still picking at one another and poking fun. Yeah, and of course sharing everything including those long talks at night.
I thank God nothing can take away yesterday. I see the two of you together the way things were yesterday and take comfort in knowing you remain together even now. Sandy has departed this life to be in the special place God has prepared for her, I guess you couldn't stay away from each other too long.

Well, as I always said," behave and play nice, girls."

Miss you both, but comforting to imagine you two together. Bask in God's glory and continue to intercede on behalf of those of us still on this side of life.

Love and miss you both.

My love always,
Gracie

Mommy,

It's me again. Growing up, you know you were my everything! Just wanted to remind you, in case you forgot just how much you were a part of me.

Those of us still on this journey of life continue to be tested and challenged. We need your intercessory prayer and power. HELP!!!! You know who we are. Please touch the hem of HIS garment on our behalf.

Received Christmas card for you from uncle Alvin in Chicago. Apparently he doesn't know your new address. I'll have to tell him. I'm sure it will break his heart. He has always been such a faithful friend of the family. Anyway, just had this request pressing on my heart. Do your thing up there for us!

Loving you,
Gracie

December 20, 2010

Hi Mommy,

Well the Christmas season is upon us and the void is ever present. Kelly is going to decorate the little Christmas tree you always kept in your room. The rest of the house and several of the trees outside have beautiful lights- blue and white. Jerome did a great job. Just thinking of you and missing you. It is hard, but we are pushing through and trying to keep in mind the real meaning of Christmas. Knowing that you are with the Savior is our consolation.

Loving you always,
Gracie

December 2, 2010

Hi Mommy,

This was our first Thanksgiving without you and you were sorely missed. You left us with so many wonderful Thanksgiving memories. You were a wondeful cook and hostess back in the day. I can still picture the extended dining table adorned with your best tablecloth, silverware, water glasses and, of course, the banquet you prepared with such pride. Can't top that! The next day or so, we would have a delicious turkey soup from what was left over. We had no turkey soup this year, but Thankgiving was good. Thank God for football! I know you and uncle Ozzie, aunt Myrtle, uncle Fonsa, uncle Reggie, aunt Nora, uncle Ken, "O'Gara" , grandma Kelly, uncle Alton,, uncle Asley, aunt Ena, grandma Lilly and grandpa AB.....WOW, and countless other relatives and friends had a joyful feast of Ambrosia that day and everyday. I know you're happy, but some days it still hurts. Hard to let go. I can't even shut up, as you can see.

I love and miss you,
Gracie
