On March 20th, 2023, Bertha Maria Carrillo arrived at the gates of Heaven after 101 years on earth. She was born in Mérida, Yucatán on June 9th, 1921 and migrated to the United States with her husband Mauro Carrillo Sr., where they enjoyed every day of their lives.
Anyone who knew her knew she was tiny but mighty! A strong, hardworking, devoted Catholic woman. She was a caring wife for 70 plus years, a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved deeply and provided for her family. She created a better life for generations to come. She took advantage of any opportunity she was blessed with and saved every penny! She and her husband created a beautiful life they always dreamt of as kids in México. They first moved to Los Angeles, CA. In 1962 they bought their house in San Fernando, where they decided to live the rest of their lives. Bertha and Mauro Sr. had undeniable natural talent for seamstress and tailoring, all self-taught through determination and discipline. Bertha enrolled herself at North Valley Adult school and studied hard to learn English; she was proud to be an American citizen. They started building their business from a van selling their handmade clothes at the local swap meet. The daily grind of long hours finally paid off! They developed a large clientele and began doing custom alterations out of their home. The word spread fast, and the business outgrew their home. Together they proudly opened Mauro’s Custom Tailor in Burbank, CA. and achieved their “American Dream”. They were blessed with an amazing life. Bertha loved to cook, travel, and dance for hours while Mauro Sr. played the guitar. They were very active and well known in their community through Santa Rosa Church. They never missed a dance, fiesta, or church on Sunday!
Bertha’s entire world changed once she was blessed with grandchildren. Her tough, no nonsense exterior softened and she devoted her life to her three grandchildren, Jennifer, Robert & Dennis Carrillo. She volunteered to babysit, so her son, Mauro Jr. and her beloved daughter-in-law Barbara never had to worry while away at work. Bertha’s grandchildren were truly blessed to have a second home and mother. They are thankful for her always loving and protecting them. Always making sure her grandchildren’s bellies were full of her delicious food and daily tablespoons of olive oil. She picked them up from school daily and parked in the same spot with snacks and frozen Capri Suns for the ride home. Bertha would recite an entire rosary every night before bed and made sure to pass on her Catholic faith and morals. She insisted her family baptize their children, send them to Catholic school(s), and never forget the importance of tradition. Instilling in her family to get up early, work hard every day, and to ALWAYS be honest.
Bertha, your family will forever love and miss you. Please watch over all of us, until we meet again one day.
Viewing will be held on Monday, April 10th, 2023, at Mission Hills Catholic Chapel from 9:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 10th at 1:00 p.m. at Mission Hills Catholic Chapel. Catholic burial will directly follow at San Fernando Mission Cemetery (818.361.7387).
