Beth Curry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 24 to Nov. 25, 2015.

MANHATTAN, N.Y. — Beth Rivers Curry died peacefully at home in Manhattan Monday, surrounded by her family.

Raised on a farm in Chesterfield, the first of five children, she grew up feeding chickens and exploring the hills nearby. She attended Queens College in Charlotte, graduating as student body president and valedictorian. Beth married, raised her family and then, when her children were older, returned to Queens for business school.

Soon after, she co-founded Eagle Capital Management in New York, now a $25 billion investment firm, which manages money for families, universities, foundations and pension funds.

Even as she helped build a large investment firm and sat on the boards of many institutions, Beth remained true to her small-town values.

Eschewing the combative, confrontational style of high finance, she brought a purposeful, friendly, common-sense skepticism to Wall Street. Her disarming Southern accent and small stature masked a probing, persistent, analytic intelligence.

She had a wide, warm and genuine curiosity about the lives of everyone she met from CEOs to cabdrivers to strangers' children — and took as much pleasure stumbling upon a strange mushroom or beautiful moss growing in the woods as discovering new investment opportunities.

Beth sometimes regretted not being a scientist and later in life took great pleasure in spending time with researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College and Rockefeller University, on whose boards she served.

She was grateful to Queens for helping her make the transition from homemaker to financial executive; she served as a trustee of the college, starting in 1986, and received its Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 2008.

In 1995 she joined the board of the Hyde and Watson Foundation, providing funding to hundreds of arts, education, health care and social service organizations. Church community has always been an important part of Beth's life, and most recently she was a trustee at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. Before entering the workforce, she was a devoted community volunteer who helped build the Summit Childcare Center, New Jersey's first modern infant care and pre-K facility for working mothers.

Above all, Beth was a great storyteller and wit, inherited from her father and cultivated in a large Southern farm family. She could transfix friends and family by turning some small, forgettable moment into an unforgettable yarn.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ravenel Boykin Curry III, who was also her business partner for 27 years; her three children, Ravenel Boykin Curry IV, Caroline Rivers Curry (Rob Davis), and Marshall Anderson Curry (Elizabeth Martin); her seven grandchildren, Ravenel, Zinnia, Wick, Jackson, Quinton, Jane and Rivers; and her siblings, Jay Rivers (Cathryn), Rebecca Sullivan (Burr) and Melinda Ford (Tommy). She was predeceased by her sister, Carolyn Query.

A memorial service was held at 11:15 a.m., Monday, Nov 23, at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York. An informal gathering to remember Beth will take place at the Rivers family cemetery on East Jackson Road in Chesterfield at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 27. Lunch outside immediately following at Riverwood Farm at 759 Teals Mill Road.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to: Weill Cornell Medicine; The Rockefeller University; or Queens University of Charlotte.

May God comfort Beth's family! I live in Chesterfield, South Carolina and remember Beth from her childhood. She was always such a beautiful person. Both a strong leader and gentle person at the same time. Everyone in Chesterfield loved Beth.

Dear Ravenel, Boykin, Caroline and Marshall,
Words are inadequate to express my and the Hensel family's profound sorrow in learning of Beth's passing. Beth touched my life for most of my life - as neighbors several houses away in Summit (Woodcroft and Hillcrest), as co-founder of the new Summit Childcare Center with my mother years ago, and as a thoughtful and wonderful client and then a colleague in the investment business. I remember her first and foremost as a devoted and caring mother and wife, and her deep commitment to help those less fortunate through all the volunteer work she did in Summit, and then later her understated brilliance as an investor. We shared many chats at investor conferences and meetings over the years - she was unquestionably a savvy investor and always had a gem of an insight in the investment topic/stock du jour - that was apparently lost on most in the room. All the while her children remained front of mind - as I can not think of a time when at least one of them did not come up in conversation. She was the personification of southern gentility. Her kind actions spoke far louder than her words. Curry family, we are just so very sorry for your loss.
With deepest sympathy, Katherine Hensel and the rest of the Hensel family

I will never forget the summer I spent living at my parents apartment in the same building as Beth. One day the elevator opened to her apartment on the way up and she opened her arms wide and said, "welcome! glad you're here, let me know if you ever need to borrow a cup of sugar!" We walked to midtown together a few times and I will never forget her warmth, wit and generosity.

Have such fond memories of Beth and her family as I graduated from Chesterfield High with her brother Jay. Just in the last few years our class was blessed by Jay and Carhry hosting our reunion at the Farm House in Chesterfield. May you be comforted knowing she had a full life and contributed so much to her fellow man. A true Sourhern Lady. Nancy Jo and Jim Wood Bennettsville, sc

I don't know that Beth made up any stories; she simply mined any interesting event or relationship for it's most delightful angles. One could listen to Beth for hours; but of course, she was always taking time to listen to us! Beth transformed a mediocre 9th grade English class into one of my most delightful inspirations to teach English myself one day (I did not measure up to her example!). Then she adopted my family, far from home in the NYC suburbs so that every member of her and Ravenel's family was primary family to my children and me. Distracted by church jobs and a messy divorce, we would have suffered rocky family holidays but for Beth and Ravenel and their wonderful kids. When the right partner came along, Susan and her kids have been warmly welcomed, too. Of course, we miss her; but we emulate her grace, as well!

Dear Family, Beth and I were in the same class at Queens; I feel we have lost our brightest light. Beth was such a natural leader on campus. Her warmth, drawl and genuine interest in others could almost lull one to miss her keen mind and insight. She was at my house for the 50 th class graduation celebration and even sent flowers for the table. Beth was ever thoughtful, quietly brave, and humble to the core. All of the class of ' 63 will miss her deeply. Bonnie Currie Gilbert

Dear Curry Family,
Though it has been many years, as a new hire in Trust Investments, at Summit Trust, Beth was terrific to me. She was a wonderful human being in every way. My deep sympathy for your loss. God bless all, and God rest Beth.

Dear Ravenel, Marshall, Caroline and Boykin: I wish I could be there in person to share what must be a tremendous sense of loss. I will always treasure our days in Summit and the camaraderie borne of mutual interest in theater, music and dance. Thank you all for letting Hannah and me share in Beth's full and wonderful life.

And since I can't be there, permit me to share "The Dream Keeper," one of my most favorite of Langston Hughes' poems:

Bring me all of your dreams,
You dreamer,
Bring me all your
Heart melodies
That I may wrap them
In a blue cloud-cloth
Away from the too-rough fingers
Of the world.

Love,
