Betty Anderson Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 9 to Mar. 10, 2023.
Our mother, Betty Lou Anderson Smith died peacefully, in her bed, just shy of her 98th birthday. Still healthy and mobile, she caught Covid during the last week of February.

Mom was born March 18, 1925, in Duluth, MN to parents Alice and Ivor Anderson and joined a couple years later by brother Jimmy. She grew up in Minnesota, but moved to Ames and graduated from Iowa State in HomeEc. It was at Iowa State that she met her life partner, Richard Smith, of Peru, IA. The two started a farming life, then moved to Des Moines, where Betty was an avid Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader. She and Richard later retired in Woodland Park, CO.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 69 years, her brother, and pretty much all other family and friends her age. She is survived by son Mike (Joni) of Beulah, daughter Peg (Sergio) of Boulder, UT; daughter Cindy Galvin (Patrick), of Beulah; and son Kyle (Marti) of Colo. Springs. She took quiet pride and joy in her grandchildren Abbi (Mark), of Madison, WI; Brett (Betcy), of Arvada, CO; Anne Galvin-Soto (Isidro) of Pueblo; Emma Galvin (Daniel), of Poncha Springs, CO; and Erin (Dave), of Arvada. And she LOVED watching her great-grandson Xander Galvin-Soto.

Betty's cremated remains will lie interred with her husband in Woodland Park Cemetery.

John Townsend (cousin)

March 24, 2023

Hello all -- I'm John Townsend, Betty's last -- and youngest -- surviving cousin. Betty's father, Ivor Anderson, was my mother, Bess Anderson's brother. I spent many happy summers in my youth in the family homestead in Proctor, MN. Betty and her brother Jimmy were frequent visitors at the old house (which Ivor helped Grandpa Andrson to build). I loved those summer times when all the cousins gathered -- Joyce, Betty, Jimmy, Roger, Bobby, Ada, Ralph Jr., Johnny, Tommy. (The only one I didn't know was Bill Anderson, who was killed at Anzio in WWII.) Betty, Jimmy, Joyce and I would pile into the '41 Pontiac and drive down the hill to the Bridgeman's in West Duluth. Betty was so pretty, and she was so nice to me. Good times, wonderful memories that have stayed with me all my life.
