Betty Fischer "Betty" Conner UPPER Betty Fischer Conner passed away on December 29, 2024. Betty was born in 1936 on Galveston Island to Bertha and T.F. Fischer Jr. She attended Ball High School and the University of Houston. Betty is survived by her husband of almost 68 years, Raymond Edwin Conner; her son, Eric Christopher Conner and his wife Judy; as well as their three children, Nicholas, Noah, and Olivia. Betty's daughter Kimberly preceded her in death in 2019.
In addition to her immediate family, Betty is survived by several other family members, including Bill Labuzan and his wife Judy, Ted Labuzan and his wife DeAnn, Sherilyn Phelps, George and Nannine Reynolds, Thomas Gee, Warren and Patti Conner, and Jan Conner.
Betty was a proud BOI (Born on Island) and spent her time trying to improve life on the island and of those around her. She was a lifelong volunteer to many organizations, including the Galveston Historical Society, the Lafitte Society, the Knights of Regina, and the Krewe of Gambrinus. Betty served on the boards of the Advocacy Center for Children of Galveston County, the Gulf Coast World Affairs Council, the Galveston Hospice Center, and Children's Protective Services.
Betty was also active in her church, the Moody Memorial Church of Galveston, where she and her husband both served in many positions. Betty was a member of the handbell choir and sang in church choir for over 15 years. Betty also often played piano and organ at church services.
Betty was especially involved in the American Red Cross Galveston County Unit where she was Chairwoman to the Disaster Community Education Committee. Betty was recognized for her work at the Red Cross and was awarded Volunteer of the Year in 1994 for her work on local disaster education for hurricane safety and hazardous material accidents.
Since 1963 Betty served on the League of Women Voters. She was a past president and state board member. In 1976, Betty was instrumental in launching a live radio show "Insight," where she served as host, welcoming local speakers on a variety of topics to better educate her audience on voter issues.
Betty never turned her back on a worthy cause and once said "It's only through helping other people that you become a community."
Betty and Ed loved to entertain, and their friends will remember them as welcoming and generous. Even after hurricane Ike had devastated the Island and the Conner's home, Betty insisted on having people over, even if it meant cooking in a microwave on the second floor of their house. Betty also loved to travel, and over the years she and Ed visited 36 countries and 49 states.
Her family will remember Betty as a strong and dedicated wife and mother who always encouraged her children to be successful and to never abandon a cause. She and Ed never missed a game or event in the lives of Eric and Kim and played active roles in the lives of their grandkids.
In her final days, Betty was weak and in pain, but her only thoughts were for her family and their well being. Betty will be missed but remain forever in our hearts.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, February 1 at 1:00 p.m. at Moody Methodist Church at 2803 53rd St. in Galveston. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Society of St. Stephens at Moody Methodist Church or the Galveston Island Humane Society.
