Mrs. Betty Jean Faulkner, 84 of Charlotte NC., departed this life on Sunday March 12, 2023 at Atrium Health Main.
Betty Jean Crockett Faulkner was born on January 15, 1939 in Charlotte, North Carolina as the only child of the late James Woodrow Crockett and Alberta Kee Crockett. She peacefully transitioned into eternal life on Sunday, March 12, 2023, after an extended illness.
Betty was educated in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system and graduated from West Charlotte High School in 1956. She attended historic Bennett College earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. An excellent student, Betty continued her education receiving a master's degree in Toxicology. A true "Bennett Belle," she formed lifelong friendships that will live on forever.
Betty was a student at West Charlotte where she met and later married the late Robert Faulkner who was the love of her life. They married on August 8, 1964 and were blessed with three beautiful daughters: Jacqueline, Demetria, and Lisa. Betty and Robert loved and supported each other for 46 years until his passing in 2010 - and they are now reunited for all eternity.
Betty was deeply devoted to her family. Whatever the need, great or small - her family knew they could count on her. She was especially devoted and protective of her children and grandchildren, who affectionately called her "Meme." They will forever cherish the life direction and sense of purpose she instilled in them.
Betty was an active member of First Baptist Church-West where she served on the Board of Directors, Hospitality Committee, Human Resources Committee, Human Resources Committee and Missionary Group Six and supported youth activities including Vacation Bible School and summer tutor programs. In recognition of her dedication and service, she was named First Baptist Church-West Woman of the Year for 1991. Later, Betty joined First Fellowship Charlotte, helping to grow a new ministry in service to the Lord.
Betty was employed at Carolinas Medical Center (Atrium Health) main campus as a Toxicology Lab Chemist for 40 years, until her retirement. During her time at Carolinas Medical Center, she was recognized for her dedication to the hospital. Betty also worked for many years as a poll worker and precinct judge for the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections. Then post-retirement, her love for the community and the welfare of children led her to become a school bus monitor for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.
Betty was blessed with the gift of friendship. She was an active member of the Pi Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Quettes, Bennett College Alumni Association, and the Try Beatty Home Extension Women's Club. Betty maintained bonds of friendships that have been passed down to her children and grandchildren. Family and friends cherished pragmatic advice - delivered with with her trademark wit and humor.
Betty leaves to cherish loving memories: her loving and devoted son, daughters, and sons-in-law, Ray Ellis, Jacqueline (Otis) Yelverton, Demetria (Chris) Welch, and Lisa (Mack) Jones; adoring grandchildren, Raymond (Jocelyn) Henderson, Alayna Yelverton, and Mack Jones, II; great-grandchild, Jai Zena Henderson; sister-in-law, Hattie Brown; dedicated caregivers, Patricia Benjamin and Monique Patterson; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and a wonderful extended family of friends.

I've been blessed to be a part of this family since 1989 when Dee and I became college roommates at App State. The initial meeting of her parents, Robert and Betty Faulkner, allowed this family unit to include me as a daughter. Since then, I have witnessed abundant love, grace, steadfastness, faith, milestones, and now a legacy that will be carried on through her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grand. So many beautiful memories I will forever cherish of having the honor to have met and loved, Mrs. Betty Crockett Faulkner. Sweet sleep and I will see you again. Dee (Chris), Lisa (Mack), and Jackie (Alayna); continued prayers for comfort, peace, and strength.
Love you-Corey
