Betty June Schumann
June 25, 1928 - November 3, 2015
Betty June Schumann died Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at HopeWest Care Center in Grand Junction, CO. She was 87 years of age.
Betty was born on June 25, 1928, in Peoria, Illinois to Ray and Blanche (Shoemaker) Dixon. She married her husband of 63 years, Merritt Schumann, in 1947 in Galesburg, IL. In Grand Junction, CO she served alongside her husband as a nursing home administrator for many years at Teller Arms and La Villa Grande.
After her retirement, she volunteered in the community with Meals on Wheels and the Library Literacy Program, where she tutored adults to read. This service was dear to her heart since she always dreamt of being a teacher.
Those that loved her felt that her greater calling was that of a passionate mother and grandmother. She will be remembered for many endearing qualities; her selfless compassion toward others, her unconditional love, and her strength of spirit being the most admired of all who knew her. Her endurance was the cornerstone of her family, and this powerful legacy will be carried forward in the generations that follow in honor of her memory.
Survivors include her loving sister, Roberta Ingram of Phoenix, AZ; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Skidmore of Grand Junction; Diann and Alan Cashell of Elkins, WV; Deb and Ron Warren of Highlands Ranch, CO; son and daughter-in-law, Merritt and Jennifer Schumann of Grand Junction; 12 grandchildren, Scott Skidmore (Anna Marquez), Chris (Rhonda) Skidmore, Todd Skidmore (Taunna Oliver), Wendi (Russ) Brady, Jeff Hart, Bryan Hart, Eliot (Vanessa) Cashell, Emily (Joe) Trembly, Michael Cashell, Leslee Warren, Cody Schumann, and Rebecca Schumann; and four great-grandchildren, Larita Skidmore, Zach Hart, Hannah Hart, and Nicholas Cashell.
Per her request, she will be placed privately with her husband at Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado.
Memorial contributions may be made to HopeWest Hospice at 3090B N 12th St., Grand Junction, CO 81506. She and her entire family thank the care and services provided to her by St. Mary's Hospital, Larchwood Inns, and HopeWest Hospice.
