Coach Jones was born May 12, 1936, in Lauderdale County. After graduating from Lexington High School, he earned a basketball scholarship to Florence State College, now the University of North Alabama. A successful collegiate athletic career encouraged him to follow his passion into coaching.
His dedication, focus, and his complete understanding of the game of basketball led him to success at Lauderdale County High School, Opelika High School, Marion Military Institute and the University of Montevallo. In 1974, he became head basketball coach at his alma mater, the University of North Alabama, and the Lion basketball fortunes went to a new level. In 14 seasons, Jones led UNA to six NCAA Tournament appearances and four trips to the Final Four, including an NCAA Division II National Championship in 1979. UNA was the first college or university in the state to win a basketball national championship and is one of just four Division II programs to have won more than one Division II basketball championship. Jones led UNA to Gulf South Conference championships in 1977, 1981 and 1984 and GSC Tournament titles in 1981, 1984 and 1988. He led UNA to NCAA Tournaments in 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1984 and 1986, with his teams winning regional crowns in 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1984. Under Jones, UNA went to the Final Four in 1977, 1979, 1980 and 1984. In 14 of his seasons, Jones led his UNA squads to a combined 165-37 home record at Flowers Hall for an 81.7 winning percentage.

To the Jones family:
I was a teenager when Coach Jones took over at UNA. Being a member of that same generation, my father had always told me about about Bill Jones and how he would change UNA so to me, he was already larger than life. When he finally retired from coaching, he had done nothing but enhance that reputation and it was an honor to have been in Flowers Hall for practically every game he coached there. I don't miss him now, I've missed him ever since he retired. God bless your family and be proud of him as I know you are.

I didn't know Coach Jones personally but enjoyed following the UNA Lions basketball all over the United States during those good years! I wonder how many miles we traveled on those tour buses from Springfield, Massachusetts to Green Bay, Wisconsin to Florida to Springfield,Illinois and more but what fun it was to watch him coach. Thanks Coach Jones for some wonderful memories. God bless your family.

Joan, I was deeply saddened to hear of Bill's death. I have nothing but wonderful memories of my years with Bill, on the other side at Lexington, then as a team mate at Florence State. He was truly one of the special people that came out of our generation. His passing is a great loss, to the university and to the community. All the best to you and your family.

We would like to express our condolences to the Bill Jones Family. I played for Coach Jones at Opelika High School in 1964. I was a 10th grader and remember him as tough but fair and also as a good biology teacher. My first practice with Coach Jones was on a 50-yard hill with no basketballs. We ran for over an hour up and down the hill. This was a test of our dedication to the sport of basketball. I entered the coaching profession and coached at Opelika. Many of my basketball philosophies came from Coach Jones. He had so many emotions for the game of basketball. I experienced crying, happiness, enthusiasm, and energy. I will never forget him.

Mrs. Jones & Family,

You are in my thoughts & Prayers. Coach Jones and I had some really great talks about what it takes to be a Christian Man, Husband & Father. He always had something positive to say when he saw you. I'm glad I got the chance to go see Coach about two months ago, Although it was hard for him to remember me, I do remember seeing a sparkle in his eye towards the end of the visit, he started to remember and we had a wonderful visit that ended with a prayer. May God continue to Bless you.

What an inspiration Bill was in my life, as I know he was in many, many others. He will be missed, but I know that we will reunite in heaven for another 18 holes. Joan, God has more work for you to do here, and when it is finished, you will have a grand reunion. His spirit will continue to guide you and your church family at North Wood will rally around you. God bless you.

Ms. Joan and family,

A special thanks to Coach Bill Jones, "the promise keeper". When he recruited me, in 1975, he made my grandmother a promise that evening in our home. "If Larry listens to me for the next four years, he will have all of his needs fulfilled, he will graduate with his degree, and in the process, he'll become a man". He was truly the father figure I never had. Coach, thanks for making a man out of me.

With All the Love in My Heart,

Larry Vinson

My sincere condolences to the Friends and Family of Bill Jones. I always found Bill to be a kind and caring person, he met no stranger. He inspired many to excel in sports and excel with their lives. He was a coach, an athletic director, a diplomat, but most of all a friend. The honor was mine to have known him.

What a blessing it was to have known Coach Jones and to have worshipped with you at North Wood United Methodist Church over the years. Coach was a delightful and sincere person. He will be missed by all who knew him. He made a huge mark on all of the lives he touched. He was a wonderful person and a fantastic coach as well. But more importantly, he was a friend to all of us.
