Daniel Lytle Dolan was born Monday, May 28, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan, son of the late David and Rosemary (Lytle) Dolan. He began his journey to the priesthood in 1965 at the minor seminary of the Archdiocese of Detroit. He continued his studies in the Cistercian Order and at the seminary of the Society of St. Pius X in Econe, Switzerland, where was ordained a priest by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre on June 29, 1976.
After spending his first year as a priest in Europe, primarily in England, Father Dolan returned to the United States in early 1977, where he acquired a reputation as an eloquent preacher, and where in a few years, he had founded over 35 traditionalist Mass centers across the United States. Father Dolan's knowledge of the lives of the saints, Church doctrine, and liturgical rubrics were second to none. This knowledge allowed him to accomplish his goal of perpetuating and preserving the unchanged pre-Vatican II Catholic Mass, liturgical practices, and devotions.
In late April 1983, Father Dolan along with eight other American priests parted ways with the Society of St. Pius X due to the willingness of the Society to compromise with the modernist post-Vatican II reformers. Undaunted by this turn of events, Father Dolan zealously expanded his missionary apostolate. St. Gertrude the Great Church in Cincinnati, a parish which he himself founded in 1978 (and continued to serve as its pastor until his death) experienced rapid growth. Today it is one of the largest and most renowned in the United States.
In 1992 Bishop Mark A. Pivarunas, of the Congregation of Mary Immaculate Queen, asked Father Dolan to receive episcopal consecration. After prayerful reflection Father Dolan agreed in mid-1993 in order to assist clergy formerly belonging to Society of St. Pius X. Father Dolan was consecrated a bishop in St. Gertrude the Great Church in Cincinnati on Tuesday, November 30, 1993, the Feast of St. Andrew.
During the intervening years since his episcopal consecration, Bishop Dolan conducted a national and international apostolate. He administered the sacrament of confirmation in churches in the United States overseen by former members of Society of St. Pius X. He also traveled extensively internationally to traditionalist churches and assisted traditional Catholic organizations and clergy in Mexico, Brazil, France, Belgium, Poland, Ukraine, Ireland, Philippines, and Italy.
Bishop Dolan also ordained seminarians and priests for the Priestly Society of Trent of Mexico, the Institute of Mater Boni Consilii of Verrua Savoia, Italy, Most Holy Trinity Seminary of Brooksville, Florida, and other traditional Catholic organizations. On two occasions Bishop Dolan also served as a co-consecrator of a new bishop. Most recently, he consecrated a new bishop for the faithful of Latin America ensuring the faithful there had continued access to all the sacraments of the Catholic Church.
On Tuesday, April 26, 2022, Bishop Dolan was suddenly called from his labors in the vineyard of the Lord. He leaves behind his brother priests and seminarians, his beloved parishioners of St. Gertrude the Great Church, as well as countless thousands of virtual parishioners world-wide who relied on St. Gertrude the Great Church's Internet apostolate to nourish them spiritually, especially during the troubled and uncertain days of these past two years.
Bishop Dolan is also survived by his brothers Tom and Kevin , sisters Julianne and Maureen, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers David Dolan, Jr., and Michael Dolan.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Gertrude the Great for the support of poor priests and seminarians.

I never met him in person, but listened eagerly to his sermons and podcasts. I learned so much from these since I became a sedevacantist. Just like Fr. Cekada, he’ll be sorrily missed. A wonderful priest and teacher.

I remember a personal meeting with Bishop Dolan and he gave me so much reassurance about my family members who are stuck in the Vatican II modernism. My biggest fear was that I will not be able to attend the funeral of my parents when they pass because it will be in the modernist Church. He gave me a solution that I can attend and honor my parents without compromising my authentic Catholic faith.
Your Excellency, I know you will watch over and guide all of us, because you have trained us as soldiers of Christ to stand up for what is right and true in a loving and compassionate way.

I had been "out" of the Church for many years when I happened to be driving though Sharonville one day and noticed the sign outside a small church declaring "St Gertrude the Great Traditional Latin Mass. I don't think I immediately went to see for myself if this were true, but when I did, I knew I had found what I had lost such a long time before. I considered him my friend and looked forward to attending services any and every opportunity I could to be there. I commented, early on, to Bishop Dolan that I had been a "server" many, many years earlier, and he suggested I "Brush up on the rubrics and begin again". I did and served at many Masses since then. I was heart broken at hearing of his death but will always continue what he gave to me so long ago.

I just read the letter to the faithful written by Father McGuire, regarding the untimely death of Bishop Dolan. What a beautiful tribute.
Although we weren’t parishioners of St. Gertrude’s, Bishop Dolan was kind enough to give my adult children and their spouses religious exemption letters.
We are so thankful for holy Bishops/Priests, like Bishop Dolan, who have offered Mass for us over the years and continue to, a privilege we are so unworthy of but forever grateful for. Thanking God for His generosity and for providing us with His faithful servants. God has been so good to us more than any of us deserve.
Enteral rest grant unto him O Lord, and May perpetual light shine upon him. May Bishop Dolan’s soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, Rest In Peace. Amen.....The Bocchino Family of Saint Mary the Virgin Chapel, Paulsboro, NJ

Bishop Dolan, Thankyou. Thankyou for everything. From the time I was a child, to now. You’ve watched me grow up to be the man I am today, and encouraged me to do what it is I do today. Day in and day out. Serving others. Now that you’ve passed, I pray that you become my guardian Angel on the streets. I pray that you lead me in the right direction in decision making. Bishop Dolan I pray that you encourage me to do what’s right in our Lord and Saviors eyes, and more importantly, guiding me to make it home safe at the end of my shift. As a police officer, I pray that you watch over my fellow brothers and sisters every single day, so that way they can make it home to their families to. Bishop Dolan, Thankyou for everything. I am proud to be a catholic, and I am privileged to have gotten to know you, pray with you, and attend masses that you provided every Sunday. We’ll miss you Bishop. I’m going to make you proud by attending mass every Sunday as much as i can. Rest In Peace.
May the Devine assistance remain always with us, and may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God, Rest In Peace, Amen.

The TLM is 75 miles away and we cannot always attend. However, many Sunday mornings we turn to the internet and the 9am high mass and looked forward to Bishop Dolan's inspiring and courageous sermons. We met him in person only once as we were getting out of our car in the parking lot of St. Gertrude's, which we like to visit on our way to and from Georgia. We were very nervous and didn't quite know weather to shake his hand or kiss his ring. In his humble and gracious way, he made us feel perfectly calm and shook our hands.

Bishop Dolan was a great man and I will miss him terribly is an understatement. His kindness to me will never be forgot and his way with words especially in his incredible sermons helped me immensely. I was in extreme shock when I learned he passed. Thank you God for giving us such a man for our spiritual benefit. If a man is holy, let him pray for us, and if he is holy and wise, let him teach us. Thank you Bishop Dolan for being a great teacher. Blessed be God. Rest In Peace.

Words can’t express the sorrow that has overwhelmed me in the sudden passing of my much-loved spiritual Father, the shepherd of my soul, my dearest friend. I thank God for willing Bishop Dolan to be part of my life for so many years, and I will strive for Heaven that I may one day see His Excellency again.
He was wise, funny, kind, eloquent, compassionate, strong and uncompromising in the Faith, and most of all, holy. Surely countless souls have been saved thanks to his pastoral care. He was truly a Bishop to the world, with thousands of spiritual children, yet he could give his undivided attention to anyone in need. A true man of God whose teachings will echo through the years and inspire future generations to walk in the way of holiness. God’s good and faithful servant!
“Loving shepherd ever near, teach me still thy voice to hear” - Rest in peace, dear Excellency, you are forever in my heart, my thoughts and my prayers.
-Your faithful Gloria Antonia

It was a terrible shock to learn of Bishop Dolan's passing! I am a homebound disabled senior and the live online Masses are all I had as part of the virtual parish of St Gertrude. I looked forward to Bishop Dolan's sermons, and especially loved him for the cats he took care of as his friends.

I am grateful that God created Bp. Dolan & our paths were able to cross via the internet and email. We are blessed to have his sermons & talks available to listen to and share. His wisdom, humor, spiritual strength & deep love of our Faith will continue to inspire and encourage us through this vale of tears. I am praying for the repose of his dear soul & hopeful that he isn't in need of those prayers. I hope our Blessed Mother has reunited him with his deceased family & Fr. Cekada, as I hope to officially meet them in Heaven when God wills. RIP dear Bishop!
