Jeopardy! has lost not only its iconic host, but also its biggest fan. In his Final Jeopardy! round, Blake Owen Brewer succumbed to lung cancer on January 5, 2021. Blake was born on June 5, 1958, in Camden, Tennessee to parents Lucille and Alson "Pat" Brewer. His love of words began early. His mom often told the story of three-year-old Blake peering over the shoulder of his dad and reading newspaper headlines. In addition to words, Blake had a love of nature. He earned the rank of Order of the Arrow Boy Scout, the National Honor Society of Scouting with a focus on fellowship, camping, and service. Following graduation from Eaton High School, Blake was off to his beloved THE Ohio State University, where he honed his love of words as the News Editor of The Lantern. After earning his B.A. in Journalism, Blake attended Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, where he was elected Student Bar Association President. With his law degree in hand, Blake accepted his first assignment as a public defender in Dayton, Ohio. He said it was good for the soul. Working for corporate lawyers wasn't his style, so with a servant's heart, Blake opened his own practice to guide struggling individuals through the trauma of bankruptcy. Blake belonged to multiple professional organizations, among them the Ohio Bar Association, Parma Bar Association, International Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, and was often tapped as a speaker at Continuing Education Seminars. He was a steadfast volunteer with Boy Scout Troop 218, active at Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church, and Mayor of Harveysburg, Ohio, where he partnered with Miami University on city projects. Left to cherish his memory are his son, Jacob Brewer; step-daughter, Rachel Grabisna; sister, Emily Pheanis; niece, Allison (Steve) Druckenmiller; nephew, Tyler (Valerie) Pheanis; ex-wife, Rita Brewer; and the cousins of the Smothers Clan. "Well done, good and faithful servant . . . enter into the joy of your Master." -- Matthew 25:21 A private service was held for the immediate family. Blake's cremains will be scattered among the beautiful vistas he loved so well. Memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scout Troop 218, 19647 Lytle Road, North Royalton, OH 44133, attn: John Hanna or Holy Family Hospice, 6707 State Road, Parma, OH 44134.

I'll never watch Jeopardy again without thinking of Blake @ the Zoom meeting on Saturday mornings. It was much better to see him in person at LTSS and hear his words of wisdom and logic. We miss you "Brother" and send condolences and prayers to your loved ones and thanks for the blessing and privilege of having known you.

I was Blake's first grade teacher. His mother taught kindergarten next to my room. To his family, I am so sorry.

Blake, I had the pleasure of working with you when you were at my law firm; I'm just so devastated by the news of your passing. You were a great and passionate lawyer and a great colleague. You will be missed by the firm and all of the Courts in the Northern District of Ohio. May your memory be a blessing.
