Bob Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 17 to Jun. 16, 2011.
GEELONG legend Bob Davis has died, aged 82.
Davis, who has been ill in recent months, was admitted to hospital on the weekend and died suddenly on Monday night.
He played 189 games with the Cats from 1948-58, including the 1951-52 premierships, and was club captain from 1955-58.
He then coached the Cats from 1960-65, taking them to the 1963 premiership.
Davis then forged a long and successful career in the football media.
He lost his long-held title of Geelong's last premiership coach in 2007, and in 2009 he was given the honour of handing the cup to Tom Harley after the Cats' victory against St Kilda.
Davis was recruited to Geelong from Clunes, having twice been knocked back by South Melbourne in an attempt to play in the VFL.
His friends knew him as "Woofa" but during his playing days his great pace led to a nickname of the Geelong Flier after the train that travelled from Melbourne to Geelong.
Premier Ted Baillieu, a Geelong supporter who has known Davis since childhood, said it was a sad day for Victoria.
"Bobby Davis - he was a legend in Geelong, a legend in football," Mr Baillieu said on 3AW.
"We knew each other well enough to have a hug and have a laugh. Delightful (man), delightful family, loved in Geelong and loved everywhere."
"It is a sad day and I pass my condolences and I'm sure those of all Victorians to the Davis family."

Thank you Bob Davis for giving a person like me Born and bred in Geelong the opportunity of sharing in so many forms of enjoyment, The Football, The Humour that life should bring and importantly the values u have portrayed these include honesty, sportsmanship and family values. I am sitting in Sanfransico USA with goose bumps watching, listing and remembering over a quite frothy "as bill would say" of what you did not just for the football club but the city of Geelong, Thankyou Bob and ur family for being and giving us so much than just football, I celebrate ur life and will value ur ethics in my life Stuart Welsh

It was 1949, I was 15 yrs old. Bobby was helping at a football clinic in the country. I took a photo on my little box Brownie- he was a handsome fellow, and I changed my allegiance from Carlton to the mighty Geelong Football club then and there!!! 50 yrs later, I finally got Bobby to sign that small black and white photo - what a thrill. A great footballer, coach, TV star and gentleman. Thank you Bobby. RIP. Condolences to your loving family. We are Geelong.
