Bob Weir Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 12 to Jan. 13, 2026.
Bob Weir, who co-founded the Grateful Dead and continued the band's legacy for decades after the death of Jerry Garcia (1942–1995), died January 10, 2026, at the age of 78. He died after a cancer diagnosis; his family said that "underlying lung issues" led to his death.

Weir was a crucial part of the Grateful Dead's iconic sound, from his rhythm guitar to his lead and backing vocals, as well as his hand in writing some of the band's most enduring songs. "Sugar Magnolia" was one of his, written alongside longtime Grateful Dead collaborator Robert Hunter (1941–2019) and sung by Weir. His lead vocals also graced the classic "Truckin," which he co-wrote with Hunter, Garcia, and Phil Lesh (1940–2024), navigating his way through Hunter's rapid-fire lyrics with ease.

Country singer-songwriter Margo Price was among many to pay tribute to Weir upon his death, saying, "Bob was a sage- a profoundly wise, musical guru who taught me so much about songs, art, melody, meditation and being in the moment. He was unlike most rock stars in that he was unpretentious, deep and rooted in knowing who he was. Bobby vibrated with magic. He was both ancient and young- he always had a twinkle in his eye."

Born in San Francisco, Weir was adopted and grew up in nearby Atherton, California. He began playing guitar as a young teen, and within a few years of first picking up the instrument, he met Garcia and began his journey to musical history.

Weir famously met Garcia by chance, hearing the sounds of the older musician's banjo while wandering the streets of Palo Alto, California at the age of 16. He stopped to talk to Garcia, and the chat quickly turned into the type of jam session for which the Dead became legendary. The two decided to form a band, initially called Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions. That band evolved into the Warlocks and finally became the Grateful Dead.

As influential to the band's development as Garcia himself, Weir settled on a rhythm guitar style that complemented Garcia's lead without fading into the background. His guitar work deftly underpinned the Dead's sound, whether they were playing psychedelia, rock and roll, country, or their signature blend of all three genres and more.

In addition to "Sugar Magnolia" and "Truckin'," Weir had a hand in writing such songs as "The Other One," "Playing in the Band," and "One More Saturday Night." He remained with the Grateful Dead throughout their career, and in 1994, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside his bandmates.

With the 1995 death of Garcia, the Grateful Dead officially disbanded, but it wasn't the end of their long musical influence. In 1998, Weir co-founded the Other Ones along with former Grateful Dead bandmates and singer-songwriter Bruce Hornsby. Renamed the Dead in 2003, they toured for a decade, bringing in other musicians from time to time. In 2015, Weir and bandmates formed Dead & Company with John Mayer and Oteil Burbridge. They played regularly, most recently performing together in August 2025.

Weir's other bands included RatDog, formed shortly after Garcia's death; Furthur, founded with Lesh; and Bobby and the Midnites, a side project that was active in the '80s. Another was Wolf Bros, with whom he performed with the backing of symphony orchestras at venues like the Kennedy Center and the Royal Albert Hall.

Weir was profiled in the 2015 Netflix documentary, "The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir." With his sister, he co-wrote the children's book "Panther Dream: A Story of the African Rainforest." A longtime vegetarian and advocate for animal rights, he was involved with such causes as Farm Sanctuary and the Rainforest Action Network.

He is survived by his wife, Natascha, and his daughters, Monet and Chloe.

A public memorial service will be held Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 12:45 pm PST at Civic Center Plaza, 335 McAllister Street, San Francisco. A procession will begin at approximately 12:30 pm, traveling three blocks down Market Street between 7th and 9th Streets.

Bobby Weir inspired countless people throughout his life and will continue to inspire all those that listen to his tunes or hear his stories. I was lucky enough to see him play with Dead & Company at the sphere last spring with my mom and that will always be my favorite memory of my life. Thank you Bobby for the music that guides my life. A life well-lived, the love will never fade.

Second only to my siblings, the Dead have been the constant object in my life for the last 50 years. And while this song it ain´t never gonna end, there is a sense that something else is different...whether it´s our own mortality or the sense of finality...it´s the ending of a chapter. And this `ol Head thanks God each day for the music and the experience of the Grateful Dead. Thanks Bobby, for all you gave us

Bobby was a constant in the threads of the fabric of many people's lives around the world. He brought joy, strength, intelligence, wisdom, mischief and fun to more people than could be imagined. His existence should be an inspiration for all. I am forever grateful for Bobby's sense of fairness and his involvement in many social issues that have been important for ages. I know that Natascha, Monet and Chloe will have unfillable holes in their souls for the rest of their lives with the loss of Bobby, but his love for them will last forever and time will give them the strength to patch those holes and move on, as Bobby would surely want them to do.

As Bobby so optimistically put it, 'Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free, dizzy with the possibilities'.

Peace.

From the very first notes, their music found its way into my heart, weaving through my childhood and echoing in every corner of my life since. I´ll never forget the magic of that night at Blossom Music Center, the lights, the energy, the songs that felt like they were speaking only to me. Thank you, Bob Weir, for continuing to pour music into our souls, for giving us melodies that linger long after the final chord. Their music isn´t just something I listened to it became a part of me, a legacy I carry with gratitude and awe. Rest easy and may the music carry on!

I have been privileged to attend hundreds of concerts during my lifetime.
The concert that stands out to me as the most memorable is Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros. in Boston in October of 2018. I have never experienced a concert where the artist and the audience were connected telepathically to that extent. I have a tape of the concert that I listen to all the time, and Bob's presence and artistry still jump out 5 + years later. I saw the Dead, or Dead Family, including Bobby, over 100 times and appreciate how meaningful and intelligent this music is, and will be.

Every note of every song has impacted all who've heard it in different ways. Yet, at the same time, it brought us all together, both in happy times and sad.

When we're all together, there are no strangers, just another friend you haven't met yet. That legacy and the music will live on forever.

Rest in peace Bobby, it's been a great ride, and I'll never forget you.

Like everyone else I have a real love for Bobby Weir and the rest of the Grateful Dead. I could tell you stories of when I was 5 and coming across a record of working man´s dead or the first time I saw the Dead at MSG with my older brother Scott in 1987 when I was 9. The time I´d rather share a story of when I met Bobby backstage at a Furthur show and I was able to almost in tears say "no one has impacted me more through music then you and your friends" he just looked at me and probably thought how is this young man even here as it had always been an "older crowd" but he smiled and lifted both of his hands kind of shrugging and said "make sure you find something you love to do while you´re here" and walked away. It meant a lot to me that he stopped and spoke to me. I´m like all the other dead heads. I love these guys. I have a love affair with the community they began a love affair with them as people and a love affair with the music. The best music ever. So many nights I stood there listening, just to be in the room with them. What I´m saddened most by is now that Bobby is on his next journey I ask myself who will sing these songs to us? There´s so many spin offs and people but Bobby as we all know was beyond special. All I can say now is Thank You Bobby for a real good time.
