MY childhood Hero I collected monster models everything! stayed up just to watch Bob and the guests he brought on as a kid it seemed like his show was coming from a haunted old Mansion and I imagined Bob going into the basement and taking out the movies he was to use for the show. I have always had a skull candle even to this day! and once received a letter from Bob that he signed. I still have it kept it for about 40 years being in music the horror genre fits my lifestyle! thanks Bob for the fun! R.I.P

Bob,
I was always looking foward to Saturday night following my other good friend Mr. Benny Hill (RIP) to your awesome show. I learned that its alright to be a freak and geek no matter what the squares thought. I also loved going to your movie screening hootennannies at the New Mission Theater as well as the York theater in San Francisco, Man i wish i still had the lobby card you gave me.

Rest in Peace Bob
You will never be forgotten .

I was very sad to hear that Mr. Wilkins had passed on. I grew up waiting for Creature Features each and every saturday evening - his dry wit and personality just made those hokey movies all the better. Condolences to his family - he was loved by many people!

As a dedicated fan of "Creature Features" way back when, I was utterly bereft to learn of Bob's passing. The only time I ever saw him in person was back in 1977(8?) at the Marin Civic Center during the intermission of a John Williams concert and laser show. I spied this diminutive, blonde-haired, bespectacled man smoking a cigar about 30 feet away and grabbed the arm of my best friend. "Isn't that Bob Wilkins?" I whispered excitedly. The expression on my face must've caught his attention and, giving me a knowing wink, he raised one index finger up to his pursed lips as if to say "Don't let on that you've recognized me" -- soon after which the signal was given to return to our seats. IMHO, the entire planet is the worse for his absence and those who never got the opportunity to experience his quirky, "noire" sense of humor have been short-shrifted whether they know it or not.

I went to the Creature Features event last night in Niles. Sadly I didn't get to meet John Stanley who couldn't show up due to a family emergency. But I enjoyed the showing of the retrospective of the show. And I had a special reason for being there. Unlike most people, I not only watched the show, I was a guest on Creature Features when I promoted the Star Trek Video Archives back in the late 1970s. I, too, miss Bob and wish I'd gotten to know him personally. I now post regularly on You Tube as The Guy From Pittsburgh ( tm ), just bought my first video camera and still watch old sf and horror pictures. I really HATE the horror films of today ! Too much gore and little imagination.

I didn't know Bob Wilkins had passed on.As a kid living in Crows Landing, California I watched him every Saturday night. I was a fan club member with the Seven Arts Theater certificate and "Keep America Strong Watch Horror Movies". Bob use to make fun of Milpitas, California (loved it). I even traveled over to the Serra theater to see him, get an autograph and watch a 3D movie. RIP Bob, my best wishes to your family.

I used to watch Captain Cosmic every day after school. I had friend that would watch it religiously as well and we had the only Eugene, Oregon Captain Cosmic fan club (with two members, of course). I'm sure there were more but we didn't care, it was like he made the show just for us. So sad that Bob has passed away, but he has left us all a great legacy we can enjoy every day. Farewell Mr. Wilkins, hopefully they like science fiction where ever you are.

How I loved Bob Wilkins! During my rebellious teenage years when I was always at odds with my mom, one of the few things we shared was our love for Bob Wilkins - and she and I watched his show faithfully together almost every Saturday night. Bless you Bob - and thanks for the happy childhood memories...

I remember Bob Wilkins from Creature Features. We lived in Livermore, and every Saturday night the family would sit in the living room, with a huge pan of popcorn. It's a fond memory, and Bob will always be a part of that.

I had NO idea Bob Wilkson was dead.
In the 1970's, I remembered as a child watching Saturday Nights of scary
movies on Sacramento's Channel 40-CREATURE FEATURE.
I DO remember he reminded me of Woody Allen-they looked a bit alike.
And their persona too a bit.

Bob Wilkins unknowingly stimulated the direction my life would take. I grew up watching him on TV 40,and have since become a special make-up effects sculptor for film and TV.I regret never having met him in person to tell him of the magnitude his existence imprinted on my life.Thank you,Bob. I have such fond memories of him. I am sorry for your loss. As wonderful as it was to see him on the air, you were blessed with him the more so. I had a grandmother pass with the same difficulties so my heart goes out to the family as I know the final years were very difficult.
We were all blessed by Bob and he left a marvelous legacy that will live on for a very long time.
All the best to you.
Rest well Mr. Wilkins.

I was a Horror Show virgin before Bob Wilkins. I remember being a little kid flipping through the channels at night, alone in my bedroom and finding "Horror on Party Beach" on KTVU. The film scared the daylights out of me! I wanted to change the channel or better yet, turn the TV off completely. I was so scared! But it occurred to me for the first time that I ENJOYED the thrill that being scared gave me. And thanks to Bob I will be a Creature Features lover for ever! I miss you Bob!

March 1, 2009

We are truly saddened to hear of Bob's passing. When I used to write fan letters to Captain Cosmic, I would start them "Dear Mr. Wilkins, er-uh-I mean Captain Cosmic". It was so funny how Captain Cosmic vehemently denied he was Bob Wilkins. I watched CAPTAIN COSMIC from the day it premiered. We knew from the very beginning by his voice he was Bob Wilkins!!! I tried to watch every day where possible.

Of course, I watched CREATURE FEATURES more to see Bob and what he had to say than the movies.

I heard of Ultraman because of Bob Wilkins and Augie Ragone. I still follow the latest Ultra series from Japan to this very day!!!

I have many more memories of CREATURE FEATURES/CAPTAIN COSMIC that are too long to share here.

When Bob Wilkins died, something more than the sadness of his passing has occurred to his many mourners. The program that he helmed now seems greater than it was when originally aired, and the connection to something irretrievable is keenly felt.More than simple nostalgia,or a wish for simpler times, his show in was in great part one of the places where we his audience began to put together our identities.
Did Bob think this was happening to his audience, that a social phenomenon was happening to a large segment of his watchers?Certainly not,but what he did know was that we cared for these stories, and that we took seriously our love of these often derided films .Yes he poked fun,and many recount his oft quoted "don't stay up late..."
But I remember him saying other things as well. That some off these movies are good, and a few ,are great.
His observation when telling us about the film 'THEM',is the terror was in the acting from a traumatized childs eyes,or the fear in Howard Hawks great 'the THING' was that we didn't see the creature, but what we were told about it!
My love of Universals great gothic horrors came from this program.
One night he ran Frankenstein, and as I watched, genuinely scared ,Bob came on one commercial break, and said that you had to feel sorry for the monster, for it had been the victim .I learned something at that very moment about larger truths...in a monster movie of all places. And Bob was the teacher.I rooted for the monster from that point on and was angry when the villagers burned him,and the man who made him never apologized.
What I really learned though, was that unlike the poor monster,I wasn't alone.
Others spoke of these films, and of this good man who brought them to us.On the school yard when I was young, and later at work, and now in recollections with others of those lost days.
And now he's gone,Bob Wilkins is dead, and the world is less magical.
But the Monsters still walk, and its my job to tell my kids about what makes 'Them' so effective, what makes the 'Thing' so scary, and why the monster is the victim in Frankenstein.
I also will tell them of the man who told me.
An era has passed, and now we must start a new one.For everything I gained during those years something must be lost. And I lost Bob Wilkins.
My gratitude to Bob grows every time my kids and I share one of these movies.
I'm better for him.

I live in Sacramento area now however I grew up in the San Francisco bay area during the early 70's Bob Wilkins was my friend. He was a friend to anyone young or old that had the privilege of watching late night sci-fi or horror movies with him. It did not matter how scary the movie was for an 8 year old like myself Bob was always there with a little humor and a lot of heart. I was even privileged enough to watch Captain cosmic. No matter what I was doing or what trouble I was getting into everyday from 4-5PM I was glued to the TV to see Bob and 2t2 bring some of the best Japanese series to life.

As many childhood things they fade, however with Creature features they became cherished memories, over the years I have never forgotten Bob or his great shows that had such a positive effect on my life. Most recently I was waiting for an appointment in a Davis Starbucks. I picked up a newspaper thumbing to the entertainment section.

I felt tears slowly roll down my face as I saw the headline, Bob had passed. I was devastated, all these great memories I had of him and his shows came pouring over me to the point someone waiting in line asked what was wrong. I read part of the article before long we had 5-6 people in this small Starbucks discussing our favorite recollections from his show many years passed. By the end the person I was originally waiting for had showed up and was sitting at the next table listening intently to our conversation. We didn't realize 2 hours had gone by, my friend did not want to interrupt and was fascinated listening to our antidotes.

Please pass my along my most heart felt condolences to Bob's family and let them know I am just one of many many people he touched over the years. I only wish and truly regret I never had the opportunity to meet him in person.

Our deepest condolences to the Wilkins family. I, too, grew up watching Bob in Sacramento on KCRA and KTXL. In recent years, I've been pleased to be able to purchase tapes and DVDs of Bob's shows, and they are still more entertaining than anything from the networks on Saturday night. We will miss him.

Sally and family - I just found this online, and it's so wonderful to read all the nice things everyone has to say about Bob! Bob Wilkins was a big part of my growing up in both the Bay Area and the Sacramento area. I was lucky to be a fan in both areas. I lived in San Leandro until 1972 where I watched Creature Features, and then we moved to the Sacramento area (Fair Oaks) where I quickly found his show on channel 40. Never realizing they were technically not the same show. I just assumed Bob Wilkins and Creature Features were seen everywhere on Fridays and Saturdays. :0) It wasn't until years later that I learned that I was just lucky enough to have lived in both of his markets. Actually luckier since Bob continued his show for channel 40 after he had left channel 2.
My sincere condolences to the Wilkins family during this very sad time.

I remember with great fondness Petaluma in the early 70's watching Bob in my bedroom on my black and white console TV that only received about 6 channels. I couldnt channel surf because that meant getting off the bed. I sometimes watched for the movies but most of the time I watched just to see what Bob would say. He really made me look forward to Saturday nights RIP Bob.

My twin and older sister use to watch "Bob Wilkens" every Saturday Night when we were about 4 and 6 years ago. We lived in rural Nevada County in the country where there were a lot of spooking trees at night-- which got much spookier when we watched his show. And his show would scare us to no end-- often causing us to be so scarred that all night we say (under the covers completely) "Are you awake? Are you awake? I can't sleep!" We were would be terrified all through the movie(s) and all night, but we waited ALL week just to get THAT SCARED again! May that wonderful and comforting man rest in peace.

Well there goes another wondeful memory of my youth. We used to sit around in my College days and do the Pizza and Beer thing while enjoying Bobs' wit and the great movies. It was what we looked forward to all week. We even lit up the "stogies" to honor him! They truely broke the mold and now there are none. Thanks Bob for being part of my memory banks. I remember when I was younger, and being involved with the Oakland Childrens Chorus, he would invite us to sing on his show at Halloween time. it was such an honor and I will hold that memory in my mind as long a I live. For Dave Powell..the movie was Empire of the Ants and I was there. Bob used to have contests asking for viewers to submit an "essay" of sorts regarding the films. I actually was invited to two of those films. I still have the Creature Features Button, Certificate and picture of Bob from his CH 3 days in Sacramento. He truly was missed long before this and will be more so now. God Bless you Bob Wilkins, the memories have lasted all of my life. Best wishes to your family, may Bob rest in peace.

Bob was a great man. He made Saturday night fun, particularly when you’re a little kid and ya got nowhere to go.

I remember when he showed Night of the Living Dead, he warned us about it for weeks about how scary it was. “I’m not joking”, I think he said at one point. My buddy and I watched it from under the bed, it freaked us out so.

I once met him at the opening of the Federation Trading Post, a Star Trek goodies store in Berkeley back in the ‘70’s. He was a real nice guy, easy-going and funny with all us geeky kids.

He will be missed!! RIP

Bob Wilkins is a Bay Area icon, predominantly for his "Creature Features" hosting. I remember when I was young, I tuned in many times for the movies -- and for the dry wit of Bob Wilkins. As a teen, in 1976 or 1977, I even got to meet him when he did a Saturday morning hosting of a horror pic at Serramonte 6 Theater in Colma, where I was an usher. I was surprised at how many people showed up at 8am for this "event." I don't remember the movie, but I remember meeting Bob Wilkins. May he Rest in Peace.
