Bonnie Champion Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 2, 2024.
Gadsen - Bonnie Jean Champion (Pickett) passed away on Sunday the 27th of October 2024. Bonnie was a strong, independent woman who was confident within herself. She was quick to laugh with a good natured sarcasm. A natural athlete of small stature that went fiercely with every endeavor. Relentlessly loyal to her family and friends she completely invested in making the best out of life. She enjoyed the simple things in life, marveling at the green foliage every Spring. Gifted with a green thumb she grew beautiful flowers and massive oak trees with equal ease. Bonnie shared her love of all things green and growing by ensuring her family and friends had the sprouts, seeds and bulbs of whatever she grew. In the sun was always the place to be for Bonnie which kept her outdoors the majority of her long and happy life. Perpetually in motion she had little time to be idle. Affectionately nicknamed "Dirt Dauber" when she was a young girl as she buzzed from place to place. She was a force of nature determined to leave nothing uncompleted. With her quick wit and unwavering memory, Bonnie was always ready to apply good common sense to whatever was before her. Bonnie's life brought her to live in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida where she built a community of close friends that added as much to her life as she did to theirs. She was graced with a love that spanned 63 years of marriage, three children, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Bonnie is survived by her husband Jimmy Champion, daughter Beth Champion, son Jim Champion, son James Champion, granddaughter Andrea Smith, grandson Gage Champion, granddaughter Esma Kostrebic, great grandson Landon Smith, great granddaughter Addie Smith, great granddaughter Vayda Smith, brother Billy Joe Pickett, and brother Harold Pickett. Bonnie was preceded in death by her mother Bertha Mae Pickett, father Joe Pickett, brother Jack Pickett, and brother Terrell Pickett.

Bonnie will be greatly missed.

What a beautiful picture of Bonnie. The picture of her is exactly the way that I remember her smile. She was a beautiful person with a great sense of humor. Bonnie was hard working, energetic, and motivated with every adventure that she would undertake. When I would come visit the family, you would often find Bonnie outdoors enjoying the sunshine. I always remember Bonnie and Jimmy sharing time together. They always had something new that they were learning together and enjoyed sharing their knowledge. I can still picture them taking their long walks together. Bonnie, Jimmy, and the family were always welcoming and kind to my family, and I. When they loved you, they loved you big. Bonnie, you will be truly missed, but the memories of you will always be with us and the many lives that you touched.

Grief is hard, but our special memories help us cope. I hope Jimmy and the rest of Bonnie's family will cling to those memories.
The first time I met Bonnie & Jimmy was the beginning of a wonderful friendship. They were taking their daily walk on the bike trail in Milton. Paul and I were riding our Trikkes that day. We stopped to answer their questions about our Trikkes. We laughed when we discovered that Bonnie and I shared the same first name. Our friendship grew over the years. I will always remember our chats around campfires, especially when we camped in their backyard. I will miss that beautiful Soul and her words of friendship & comfort.

Bonnie & I have been friends for approximately 30 years. She was a wonderful friend. Very caring & thoughtful. Always there when needed & always caring about me & my Family. We shared many hours talking about our children & Grandchildren. We also enjoyed playing Dominoes & Cards.
Our Husbands were friends & we took a lot of vacations together. We enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Branson, MO. Florida & the Smokie Mountains! We loved Camping together & camped from the Mountains to the Ocean!!
Bonnie & I shared a "Sisterhood" that was special. We were loyal friends and loved each other. I will forever love & cherish the memories we made together.
Bonnie, you rest now. Your work here on Earth is done. I take comfort in all the Precious Memories we made and in knowing I will see you again, some Great & Glorious day.

Lovingly,
Elaine C. (Brooks) Singleton & Family
