PEKIN ~ Winifred P. Sanborn, 98, of Pekin, passed away at 12:50 a.m. Monday, August 10, 2015 at Pekin Hospital.
Born January 14, 1917 in Bloomington to Charles and Ella (Bane) Peirce, she married Louis A. Sanborn on September 2, 1939 in Bloomington. He died December 21, 1978. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Marcia Sanborn; one infant son, Stuart Sanborn; two sisters, Eloise Hearin and Mary K. Knox; and two brothers, Bane Peirce and Earl Peirce.
Surviving are two sons, Stephen (Nancy) Sanborn of Madison, WI and David (Sally) Sanborn of Green Valley; three daughters, Alice (Robert) Brown of Pearson, WI, Nanci Malcolm of Washington, and Phyllis Sanborn of Pekin; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was a 1938 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.
Winifred was a librarian at Pekin Public Library for 14 years, retiring in 1971.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pekin and the Episcopal Church Women. She also was a member of the Pekin Hospital Auxiliary and the Pekin YWCA.
In 1959, she was named Pekin’s Mother of the Year. She was also honored in 1983 as Woman of the Year by the Pekin Altrusa Club.
Winifred was a great cook and enjoyed playing bridge, reading, and sewing.
Her memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 13, 2015 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pekin. Father Brian Kellington and Deacon Laurie Kellington will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Private burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.
Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 343 Buena Vista, Pekin, IL 61554 or to the American Heart Association, 2141 West White Oaks Drive, Suite A, Springfield, IL 62704.
