Boyd SCHLENKER Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Aug. 21 to Aug. 22, 2012.
SCHLENKER, Boyd James
March 18, 1975 - August 16, 2012
It is with broken hearts that we announce Boyd James Schlenker passed away unexpectedly in Okotoks, Alberta on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at the age of 37 years. Boyd was a sincere, kind and gentle person and is lovingly remembered by his parents, Lynn and George Myette, Brent and Dyanne Schlenker; his brother, Brad; grandparents, Don and Fran Hart; Jim and Betty Schlenker; his stepsister, Claire Jackson and her family; stepbrothers, Darryl and Jason Ruff, along with many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Boyd was born March 18, 1975 in Medicine Hat, where he graduated from Medicine Hat High School. He then moved to Calgary in 1993 to attend SAIT and begin a drafting career. Boyd eventually felt a desire to make a broader contribution to society and returned to Medicine Hat College were he graduated in 2001, with a diploma in Police Science. Boyd applied to and was recruited by the Calgary City Police Service in 2003 where he served as a dedicated police officer until his death. Boyd found great joy in the outdoors and pursued his passion of fly fishing with his two black labs Sassie and Cindy, and his friends and family. He made the 20 hour drive to chase chrome in the Skeena River many times and pursued this passion at every opportunity. Boyd was an expert fly fisherman and loved guiding in Southern Alberta and B.C. In the past couple of years he became a keen 4x4 off-road enthusiast and had many adventures in the foothills. Boyd will also be remembered for his love of sports, having been a hockey goaltender for most of his life and for playing in 2011 at the World Police and Firefighter Games in New York City. Over the years, Boyd also coached hockey as the assistant coach with the Medicine Hat Cubs and Cochrane AA Midgets. He loved sports and he loved music. When he was at home you would find him watching hockey or fishing programs, or playing his bass guitar. Boyd will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A celebration of Boyd's life will be held at the Cypress Centre in Medicine Hat (2055 - 21 Avenue S.E.) on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. David Skidmore officiating. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation, 665 Spruce Way S.E., Medicine Hat, AB T1B 4L4 or to the charity of your choice. Schlenk, I was just thinking about old times and the fun we had. I stumbled across this site and had say hi. You were the best partner a guy could have and when I tell stories about the crazy, goofy stuff we dealt with on the streets in 1 District, it brings a big smile to my face. You were a great cop and a solid friend. We all miss you.

Each one of us here today will at one time in our lives look upon a loved one who is in need and ask the same question: We are willing to help, Lord, but what, if anything, is needed? For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don't know what part of ourselves to give or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it is those we live with and should know who elude us. But we can still love them - we can love completely without complete understanding. My heart goes out to all who knew and loved you especially your Loving family. Boyd, your beautiful smile and our countless memories will live forever in Skylar's and my hearts. You gave so much of yourself, your wisdom and your heart to us and we will love you and treasure our time with you always. Till we meet again...<3

He continues to thrive in our hearts and memories, and always will. I have enjoyed talking about funny things he said, silly things we did, and times we spent together with our friends. It is surreal that he is gone, but we will keep him in our hearts forever and never forget how truly wonderful he was.

Boyd with are with you in spirit.

To all of you that have expressed your thoughts and shared your memories with us, Thank you.

We all were very fortunate to have known him and been part of his life.

At Boyds request his ashes will be returned to the waters he loved. A small gathering of close family and freinds will meet at the Policemans Flats Boat Launch on Sunday September 2nd at 3:00 p.m. to set him free at a place he fished almost every night as a young man living with his mom Lynn, Stepfather George and brother Brad.

I had not only the opportunity of being his father, but a true fishing companion and freind. We have a strong bond with each other shared through the sport of fly fishing, which we both learned together from the ground up. We spent countless hours studying, sharing and teaching other to fish. A true inspiration to me. He was very instrumentatal in my recovery as an alcholic. He is deeply implanted in my soul and were bonded through our common healing cleansing of the soul of a flowing river. Boyd and his stepmother Dyanne are both very quiet in nature, few words spoken but the respect and deep admiration that they had for each other beamed like a ray of sunshine. I had the opportunity to witness this many times at the many fishing destinations that we were able to visit. She became a very proficient angler with the help of a an excellent and patient teacher, her dear freind and loving stepson Boyd.
Boyd, is dearly missed by never forgotten. His memory will live on with all of us.
We are planning to have an annual benefit in Boyds memory for the Childrens Wish Foundation held on the Bow River at the Cottonwood Golf Course each year. This in my opinion could be a great way for all of Boyds family and freinds get together and share some laughs and memories. We would have a benefit auction and dinner as well. Any other suggestions from anyone, or I you wish to help out please contact me. Until then. Tight lines, Boyd.
Your loving Father, Brent.

Boyd was my buddy in architectural drafting in high school. He was funny, he was smart, and he was hot! And he never gave me the time of day, other than as a friend. And that's ok. I didn't keep up with Boyd after high school, however, his energy and spirit will always be with me in my heart.

I am so sorry to hear of Boyd's tragic and premature passing.

Boyd was a very close friend growing up and many of my life's best memories include Boyd. From our crazy trips to various music festivals like Infest & Highwood together, to building the halfpipe in his Mom's backyard, to ripping the streets of Meicine Hat on skateboards and BMX, the countless snowboard trips, and even working our first jobs together for years at Bonanza, and rocking out to our countless Red Fisher shows....Boyd was always there contributing to the stoke & always charging full steam ahead. Boyd was a true meber of Team Tuff & I will always remeber him & celebrate the unreal times we had together.

I am now living in Australia, and cannot make the funeral in person, but know that I will be there in spirit with you all. I offer my deepest sympathies to Brad, Boyd's parents, and all those who will miss Boyd as I do.

Rest in piece HomeBoy-D

Sincerely,

Scott Andreas
