Bradley Hughes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 24 to Feb. 25, 2023.
Bradley Harrison Hughes was born on September 27, 1950 in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Wilbert and Elizabeth Harrison Hughes Horn. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Sam and Ida Belle Harrison; grandmother Mrs. Mary Powell; his devoted, loving stepfather Charles Horn; and his brother Rodney Harrison Hughes.

Bradley was reared in Southern California and was educated in the Los Angeles and Inglewood School Systems. Bradley graduated from Morningside High School. He attended these schools at a time when there were few Black people in Inglewood and there was considerable racial strife in the school system. In spite of this, Bradley prospered. Bradley went on to El Camino Community College and California State University at Long Beach (CSULB) where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in accounting. Following graduation, Bradley accepted a position with the Big Eight accounting firm Price Waterhouse as an auditor. Bradley received his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license after passing all four parts of the CPA exam upon his first attempt. He later worked for Xerox Corporation and the Los Angeles Unified School District where he retired. Bradley's love for accounting inspired others to pursue the field.

As a teenager, Bradley loved playing baseball. He played wherever he could find a team. He also played football, ran cross country and ran track for his high school team. Bradley was always goal oriented. In high school he was mature beyond his years. Bradley also had a very strong work ethic and began working while in the 10th grade. Bradley understood early in life the value of earning money. From his work efforts, he was the first in his group to get a motorcycle, a car (1968 VW Bug), and a house. He was the first to get a union job. Along the way, Bradley helped many of his high school friends secure employment where he worked.

Bradley loved spending time with family and friends, lifting weights, jogging, especially with his dog, preparing tax returns, running 5K races, bowling, playing baseball, and playing cards while showing off his unique way of shuffling and dealing cards.

In 1972, Bradley and Shirley Hampton were married but later divorced after 10 years of marriage. There were no children from their union.

Bradley departed this life on February 5, 2023. He leaves to cherish his memory: an aunt, Eva H. Turner (Eldridge) of Fairfield, Alabama; cousins: Terry Harrison and Theron Harrison of Los Angeles, California, Cynthia McDowell of Fairfield, Alabama, Brenda Redrick (Michael) of Hoover, Alabama and Karen Turner of Lakeland, Florida; his former wife Shirley Hampton Hughes Fort, his extended family the Mendoza's, Reeves, and Hampton families; a special friend, Margaret Lishey Jetton; and a host of cousins and friends.
