Braxton McKee Obituary

Published by The New Haven Register from Feb. 4 to Feb. 5, 2014.
McKEE, BRAXTON Braxton McKee, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale Medical School was born in Winchester, VA in 1933. He graduated from Mersersberg Academy in Pennsylvania and went on to college at the University of Virginia. Following college, he graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School in 1959. After his medical internship at New York Hospital, he trained as a psychiatrist at Yale Medical School and did further training as a psychoanalyst at the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis in New Haven. Most of his professional life was as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in private practice in New Haven, however, for his entire professional career he was a very active member of the clinical faculty at the Department of Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. He was a beloved teacher, supervisor and mentor to many medical students and residents in Psychiatry. His outstanding teaching skills were recognized by being awarded a teaching prize by the Yale Psychiatry Department and the Sabshin Award from the American Psychoanalytic Association. As well as his teaching activities, he was one of the authors of the book The Seasons of a Man which describes the patterns of adult development in men, exploring and explaining specific periods of personal development through which people must pass. Dr. McKee was a remarkable person with a gift for friendship. He had a wonderful sense of humor and, at times, a sense of the ridiculous. While he was a good listener, he readily shared of himself, which was part of his warmth and generosity. He had an unusual passion for making walking “sticks” from maple saplings and has populated the city of New Haven (and Europe, UK, and Australia) with them. He was an avid reader and a devotee of opera, particularly the Opera Program at the Yale School of Music. He will be greatly missed by many people. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Siggins of New Haven, CT, his sister Anne Chase of New Hampshire, his daughters Katherine McKee of Berkeley, CA and Rowena Mason of Santa Paula, CA and his son, David McKee of Cambridge MA and by a grandson, Sam Mason and granddaughter, Anna McKee and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 11:00 am at Christ Church, 84 Broadway, New Haven, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Braxton McKee Scholarship Fund for opera students at the Yale School of Music and may be sent to Yale University Office of Development, 150 Church St., New Haven, CT 06510. Arrangements are with the Hawley Lincoln Memorial, 493 Whitney Ave., New Haven.

I am so sorry to learn of Braxton's passing. I loved his open positive attitude and wry sense of humor. I walk with the walking stick he gave me and I think of him.

Braxton and I grew up and attended school together in Winchester, Virginia. He and his rother,Peter, were always good for a laugh and pranks. They were great pals to hang out with in the 1940's. Harry Shendow, Richmond, Virginia

Dr. McKee has been one of the most inspirational men I've know. Such a beautiful legacy left.

Braxton was one of those people, so intelligent, so sane, so warm, so appreciative, that make you happy to be alive. It is terribly sad to have him gone from this world.

Sad news arrived here in Florida with the death of Braxton. Susie and I meet Braxton as we were being recruited to Whitney Center in 2003. He remained a close advisor from the time we arrived at WC until we retired in 2011. A keen mind who challenged all of us often but whose purpose was to make us and WC better. With his passing and that of Donna Deirs some months ago, Whitney Center has lost two of its most important advocates. I will remember him with great respect.

Dr McKee was a resident when I was a Yale Medical student and I remember and valued his kind teaching and example as a sensitive and sane psychiatrist. I'm sure his family and friends will miss him.
