Brenda Ondrajka Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 5, 2025.
Brenda Leona Ondrajka, 59, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan, surrounded by her loving family.

Born at Munson Medical Center on June 12, 1966, and raised in Midland, Michigan, Brenda was the daughter of Jack and Harriett Smaltz. She attended Bullock Creek High School before earning a Bachelor's degree in Education from Central Michigan University, where she also met her husband of 34 years, Jim Ondrajka.

Brenda dedicated her life to caring for others. She began her career teaching emotionally impaired children and, once she started her own family, opened her home to many more by running a daycare. Later, she worked at Independent Bank, where her warmth and kindness built lasting relationships with both coworkers and patrons.

In her younger years, Brenda loved playing softball, tennis, and volleyball. She cherished summers at Eight Point Lake, often pausing to take in the beauty of the sunsets. A faithful member of Central United Methodist Church, she joyfully played in the handbell choir and gave freely of her time and talents. She found delight in puzzles, music, and dancing, but most of all in the company of friends and family. Brenda simply enjoyed being included and spending time with those she loved, whether at a gathering, around the table, or just sitting together. Everywhere she went, she seemed to know someone, and she never missed the chance to greet them with her signature smile and heartfelt "thank you." She had a rare gift for making others feel seen, valued, and loved.

Brenda fought Stage IV Melanoma with extraordinary courage and grace for four years, meeting each obstacle with strength, perseverance, and faith. Though her journey was difficult, she now rests in peace, free from pain, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience.

Above all, Brenda cherished her family. She shared her life and love with her husband, Jim, and was a devoted mother to Angela (Matthew) Schlueter, Alec (Sarah) Ondrajka, and Abigail Ondrajka. She was the beloved daughter of Jack and Harriett Smaltz, and a cherished sister to Dan Smaltz, Ray Smaltz, and Kay (John) Stevens. She also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and numerous friends who will miss her dearly. Her warmth, generosity, and steadfast faith will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.

Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Brenda's life will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 25th at Central United Methodist Church (Traverse City, Michigan). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made through GoFundMe (https://gofund.me/c1ac92ac5) to help support the family with extensive medical bills and contribute to Abigail's future education expenses or to Central United Methodist Church.

I´ve had the pleasure of knowing the family for many years. Being their hairstylist, watching the children grow and admiring the gear love that Brenda has had her family. I also seen what a great attitude she had through these last four years.... & that she had a faith and love for God through it all. She will be greatly missed! Sending love & prayers to family and friends

Brenda was such a beautiful lady-both inside and out. Whenever I was with her-even in these last years-she always was smiling and had kind words. May God bless your family with His comfort, strength and peace.
