I have known Brian since about 1973 working at several lofts. Always listening and very enlightening with his great understanding and professionalism in sail making. Whenever I had a chance to sail with him, he was always positive, helpful and above all very logical and smart, and worked with me to push my boats to best results. He was also very fair and considerate, and all he wanted is to help our sport in any way he could. He was also generous with his time and even with his money to support sailing events and even sailing organisations, even after his horrendous accident. His lengthy recovery showed a single minded and persistent attitude towards his own and other peoples problems; always finding a fair and supporting solution. He was one of the outstanding individuals in the Toronto Sailing Community, and will be dearly missed by us all. May he rest in peace.

I first met Brian when purchasing an asymmetric spinnaker for my J/35 and was immediately impressed by his professionalism, care for details, and willingness to spend much time providing advice. It was clear that Brian thought of our relationship as much more than a commercial transaction. He was genuinely interested in my sailing efforts and each time we met wanted to know how things were going and was ready with ideas for more speed. Those conversations will be sorely missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Brian's passing. I only really knew him from trips to the UK loft but he was an unending fountain of knowledge and creative thought. He always had time for me. He had a big heart and a big smile.

It was with great surprise and sadness that I heard about the passing of Brian. He was a gentle' man and a very knowledgeble sailor/sailmaker. I owe it to Brian who made my latest set of sails that made me more competitive. He will be greatly missed.

I received a call from Trudie to say that Brian was gone. We talked for a while about his recent history, a fall from a ladder and recovery, the Sail loft, family - Don, Ruth and Peter, Donna who I've not had the pleasure of meeting. It seems that Brian was in a good place in life, and this is bad timing.
Brian Chapman was a gifted individual who I had the privilege of calling a friend. Our family's histories were entwined long before our time. We attended high school in Port Credit concurrently, shared a love for sailing, and raced together out of PCYC on Rogue, Something Extra, Amazing Grace, and various other yachts over the many years that followed. We were always in contention, that strong competitive spirit of his coming through every time. I worked with Brian in the original Horizon Sails loft and we had a serious and hilarious time with Gerry Morris making sails and a business thrive. I have solid memories of those years and sail to this day.
Brian had a sense of humour that was unparalleled. Post race in the yacht club cocktail lounge, a Mount Gay Rum and coke in hand "Six of one, half dozen of another." and "Here's to you and here's to me and if by chance we disagree, to ........." well, you can probably finish it.
For Posterity.
Lake Erie Race - Buffalo to Toledo: Something Extra. A massive electrical storm hits us at night near the end of the course, wind 80 kt, horizontal rain, we're exhausted, Brian is glued to the helm and says "Take the sails down now". We head downwind with bare poles, knot meter at 8.5 kt heading 180 degrees away from the finish line. A seasick crew member demands to jump over board so we tie him to the backstay. We miss hitting a yacht by less than a boat length, soooooooo close! We put the storm jib up and head back upwind into a pounding sea, Brian helming most of the way to the Toledo finish, at 5:00 am. The bar opens, we all cheer and end up on the lawn, asleep in the sun, toasted. We figure we're last, but end up 6th with most yachts DNF.
This is what Brian Chapman loved about sailing, adversity with purpose, athleticism with reward, and a multitasking sport that never stops.
We've had only sporadic contact over the past few years, but I'm so pleased to know that he had his own Sail loft again, since making sails and yachts go faster was his passion. It's a significant loss to the sailing industry, family and friends. My condolences to all, with special thanks to those sharing history and anecdotes.

Well, I am shocked to get the news and saddened. Condolences out to his family and friends. I am a VERY old friend of Brian's when he was in high school. He was actually my 'boyfriend" and neighbour in the late 70's - vivid memories of Trudie and Don as neighbours and the Chapman family - skiing at Talisman, partying in Port Credit, sailing on Rogue at the Yacht Club, travelling from university to Connecticut when he was learning the sailmaking business. He was so passionate about skiing and sailing - very competitive however so easy going with people. I do hope for all those who have been close to Brian over the past 40 years that you have great memories. I do have great memories from the 70's and am so sad - too young......

My thoughts have been with Donna since I heard the terrible news last Tuesday. Brian was a true friend of sailing and so supportive of everyone who enjoyed the sport. I am glad to have contributed to his giving up making car covers to return to sail making many years ago. Sail on, Brian. Fair winds.

So very sorry to hear of Brian's passing. He was a breath of fresh air in the industry, and always provided us outstanding service and counsel. We will miss him tremendously on Happy Puppy. Thank you both. Our thoughts are with you,

I received the news today and with a sense of loss since he was a standard setter worth tying to follow, which is what I recall was my fate in the lorc races of the '90's and turn of the century.
Pleasant and ready with advice, a person so easy to call a friend.
His accomplishments were many and we will miss him.

I have known the Chapman family for most of my life sailing with Brian's dad,Don Chapman, when Brian was 10 years old. Brian was a competitive sailor on Rogue his dad's C&C 35. I remember one Susan Hood race when we tore the top off the spinnaker at night. I hoisted Brian up the mast at night, rail down to retrieve the remainders of the chute. Brian then slide down the forestay to the foredeck. Then the time after a race in Toronto when Brian and my brother Bill each had a slice of bread spread with peanut butter. Brian got that look in his eye looking at my brother and before you new it they each had a peanut butter sandwich stuck to their head. Brian had a great sense of humour which made sailing with him an enjoyable time irregardless of the winds we had that day.
When I was learning to ski at Talisman ski club there was Brian blasting down the hill with his helmet on as he practiced for the next ski race. Whether it was winter of summer Brian was a joy to have as a friend.
We will all miss Brian with his indomitable spirit.

I am shocked and so saddened to learn of Brian's passing.
He was not only a brilliant sailmaker but a funny and kind individual. He always had time to talk about anything to do with sailboats and making them go fast!
He was also a great friend and sponsor of the Lake Ontaro Offshore Racing group, and particularly the Shorthanded Racing Series. Many participating yachts sporting UK sails are a testament to that!
My sincere condolences to Donna and other family and friends.
I will miss him!
Fair winds Brian.

I'm sorry to hear about Brian's passing. He always treated me fairly in business and you guys were great neighbours for the years that you exhibited at the Toronto boat show. I, too, am born in 1958 and it really gets you thinking about things. Brian will be missed. Take care of yourself, Donna.

As a young man Brian was very competitive, his passions being skiing and sailing. Brian raced to win and indeed he won every downhill race in which he competed. Sailing was certainly in his blood and the sailing world became his vocation. Don, his Dad was always very proud of his Son.

Matt and I had the privilege of having Brian and Carolyn out on our boat last year. It was a very gracious offer and we took him up on it immediately. When looking at the condition of one of our rather large spinnakers he assured us it was fine and to not hesitate using it. He smiled and said just put it up and let God take it down. We will certainly miss him and his sense of humour. RIP Brian Chapman

Brian was many things: a thought leader in his trade; a gifted sailor and sail maker; a trusted advisor; technical genius, and a coach and mentor. He gave freely of his time and knowledge even when there was nothing in it for him (but lots for the recipients of his wisdom!). Shocked and saddened he is gone. Grateful for all I learned from him.
He lives on in the trophies, flags and mugs so many of us won with his sails - and will long treasure - now with a grateful memory of Brian attached.

I am very saddened by Brian's passing. He was a very caring and dedicated person with a great love of sailing and dedicated to serving his friends and colleagues in the sailing community. He had worked so hard to rebuild himself and his life after his serious fall at his then new UK Halsey loft. Hopefully he'll find great sailing in the Heavens! God be with you.

I am shocked at the sad news and loss of a sailing friend. ABYC will greatly miss the support of a fine man with his skill and love to sail. It will be strange not to see his smiling face in the clubhouse. Donna, you are always welcome.
