Dear Barbara, Pat, and all the Mahers,

We are so sorry for the loss of your beloved husband, father, brother and son. Brian was such a wonderful and special person. Whenever he entered the room, it was like the sun was shining in and his cheerful personality warmed the room. He always seemd to be involved in some interesting thing and enjoying life. How difficult it must be to lose such a person. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of you.

I was a teenager when I last visited the states and I was very keen to go out at night in New York City.

Brian kindly snuck me out of the house and took me down to some fantastic bars I'll never forget. I'll always remember his warmth, generosity and kindness.

For all the Maher family - Some treasured memories of cousin Brian:

Summer 1975:

I was visiting Oakville from England when the Maher's summer project was to lay a patio. Pat, Brian and I were tasked with moving a large heap of pebbles for cement from the road to the back garden(yard). Brian surveyed my ham-fisted efforts with the spade with wonder; the eleven-year-old trying manfully to hide his laughter at the incompetance of his elder cousin, who was frankly more used to wielding a pen than a spade. His reassuring whisper " Come on, I'll show you how" was done with a such a mischievous grin but a quiet kindness too which spared my blushes. He then attacked the heap of stones with an energy and professionalism beyond his years. The sight would have made both grandfathers very proud.

Summer 2000-Maher Reunion:

The mischievous boy had matured into a warm and witty man. Shyly, he introduced me to his lovely wife then spoke with great pride of his children. The love between them all was so apparent at our happy party there in the sunny garden in Laherdane, where his grandparents had first met nearly 80 years before.

Brian was a lovely person who will live in all our hearts. Thank God, and those who made it possible, for the Maher Reunion which brought us together again.

Barbara, Clare, Liam, Aunt Eileen, Uncle Gerry and cousins be assured of the love and prayers of your English family. A warm welcome awaits you here whenever you want to come.

Fondly,

Christina,Robert,Gerard,Ceni and Aunt Julia, Bristol, England.

Barbara, Clare, Liam and all of Brian’s family

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I have very happy memories of Brian as a lively young boy of ten during a family visit to the Guinness Brewery museum in Dublin. He took a great liking to the samples of wonderful dark beer which we were all given. After emptying his own glass, he cheerfully finished off several of the others when he thought nobody was looking. His happy expression would have made a great picture.

Barbara, Clare and Liam,

I have never met any of you but feel like you've been a part of our family for ever. Brian and I had not seen each other for many years, but spoke often via email about his life and you. He was very proud to be your husband and father and I know that he loved you very much. I am so very sorry for your loss and that our family has lost such a special person. We love you and will always be here for you! Your WV cousin...

Bill and I saw Brian 2 weeks ago on Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. I almost didn't stop to see him because I was late for dinner at my mom's. But I did, only 10 minutes at Bill's house, but I'm thankful I saw him. As usual it was great to see him, if only briefly. I can't imagine how much more awful I'd feel right now if I had missed the opportunity.

We haven't seen him so much since he moved to North Carolina, but we always kept in touch in some way. I've been thinking back to the times we spent together. They were always good. Always. Good memories of living our lives, of growing up. New York, Jersey, Toronto. Memories of his wedding (quite a wedding for those in the know), of driving to Peterborough to hang out with Bill, of being taken care of by him and his family after returning from many trips to Asia, of him giving me his Orange Porsche 914 to drive for a day in Toronto :-), of being met at J.F.K. with him proclaiming us 'Ambassadors of the Free World', of exploring New York City together and having a lot of fun doing it, and other memories that I shouldn't mention here.

He was one of the truly good ones. He was one of the most selfless and generous people I've ever know. I will miss him dearly.
