Brian Malloy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 2, 2021.
Brian W. Malloy, of Cheltenham PA, passed away on August 2nd 2021 at the age of 69. He was the loving husband of Janet S. Malloy (nee Scheib) for 39 years. Brian was a caring father to Jonathan D. Malloy (Sarita Cini) and James P. Malloy. He will be greatly missed by his mother Elizabeth (nee Campbell) and his siblings; Patricia, David (Samille), Jane, and Joseph Jr. "Jay." He was predeceased by his beloved brother Stephen. Brian was considered to be another brother to his sister-in-laws; Kathleen Dimascio and Marguerite Downs. Brian was born in Newton, Massachusetts to Elizabeth and the late Joseph. After a brief stop in Richmond, Virginia, the family settled in Sandy Springs, Georgia where he attended high school. Brian attended the University of Pennsylvania where he played football and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a proud Penn Quaker class of 1973. Brian furthered his education by completing the Masters of Education program at Arcadia University as well as achieving an Administrative Certification at Gwynedd Mercy College. Brian was a lifelong educator and athlete. He loved teaching both in the classroom and on the field. His career within the School District of Philadelphia began at Wagner Jr. High, then Martin Luther King High School and culminated at Bodine High School for International Affairs where he was named Philadelphia Teacher of the Year in 2009. His coaching career included little league baseball and soccer with his boys, football and softball at MLK High and softball and bowling at Bodine High School. Brian will be remembered for the communities he touched and the people he influenced over the years. He served as a member of the Cheltenham School Board and was instrumental in the establishment of pickleball in Cheltenham Township. Brian was happiest when he was with his family. He enjoyed many years with Janet, Jon and Jim, taking cross country road trips and especially family vacations in Cape Cod and Destin, Florida. In his post-retirement, Brian became an avid fan of the game of pickleball, which became a daily part of his and Janet's life. Not only did the game sate his competitive appetite, it also served as a source of numerous meaningful friendships. In a natural extension of his teaching career, he offered classes to beginners in an effort to grow and share his love of a game that brought him so much joy. A memorial service will be held for Brian at a later date. Please check this obituary in the future for more details. In lieu of flowers, donations in Brian's memory to Cheltenham Pickleball would be greatly appreciated. Please make checks payable to, "Cheltenham Pickleball ? Cheltenham Township Parks and Recreation" and mail to: Cheltenham Township Administration Building 8230 Old York Rd. Elkins Park, PA 19027

Dear Malloy Family- I just learned of Brian's passing and wanted to extend my condolences. Brian was a great person and always upbeat and interested in how you were doing. He was a year ahead of me at Penn and was a good friend and Fraternity Brother. His dedication to family and teaching is no surprise- it was a true pleasure to have known him. AEKDB Brian. Sincerely, Paul Robb.

The best qualities of extraordinary parenting, coaching and teaching all came together in Brian. It was an honor to know him,and to share good times with him and his wonderful family. Brian had a quick smile, a warm generous way, and a touch of Southern charm. Brian's passing is such a terrible loss. His memory and legacy will live on with his family and many friends. His impact on the lives of countless young people,my son included, is incalculable.

Heidi and I have so many wonderful memories of our times with Brian and Janet and were so looking forward to their visit with us this week in Tahoe. Brian, always the patient teacher, was going again to try to get me to understand the rules of Pickleball. My failings to master the Kitchen were not his fault. Having known Brian since our freshman year at Penn in 1969, I can't remember one time when I saw him other than up beat and willing to help someone who needed help. That's the way he was: friendly, caring and giving of himself. A person who could be a friend to anybody. Janet, know that your loss is felt by all of us who knew Brian and considered him a very close friend whom we can't replace.

I just saw Brian on July 25th at a music show that I was the opening act for, and we got to catch up on some things because I hadn't seen him in awhile. I am shocked and saddened by this recent news and my sincerest condolences to the family.

Brian has been a great friend since my family moved to Sandy Springs in 1961. We grew up together sharing all my important milestones along the way. The Malloys have always been an extension of my family. Brian's passing leaves a hole in my heart that can never be filled. His friendship and love will always be a part of my life.

My deepest sympathies to Janet, John, Jim, Betty, Pat, David, Jane, and Jay.
I was lucky to be BFFs with Brian for 56 years. We met at Sandy Springs HS and we’re solid from that day on. A wonderful Father, husband, and friend.
He was a brother to me and will be deeply missed.

Shocked for sure! One of the nicest and most caring souls I have ever had the pleasure to know. We were Kappa Sigma brothers and football teammates. For such a large and competitive man he was even more caring and loveable. Sooo sorry!

Janet,
I am glad I had the opportunity to even if briefly know Brian as one of his new pickleball students
His joy and humor always made for a great day of lessons. You and Brian gave so much of your life to help others enjoy their new sport. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. My life was enriched by Brian and his enthusiasm for life.

Brian was the best friend a person could ever have. Anybody that knew him knew what it was like to be blessed by his friendship. He cared about people in every walk in life. He was good to everybody he met in some way. This gift is what made him such a charismatic soul that no one would or could ever forget. This is the testament to his impact in this world, one person at a time, one relationship at a time. Brian loved life. He brought light into this world. That light lives on in the lives of everyone he touched whether we knew him a short time or a long time. Janet was the love of Brian's life, Jon and Jim the apples of his eye. We share in your grief. We are left with memories but, oh, what wonderful memories they are! Love, Jon & Laura Schoff

I am a former student of Mr. Malloy when he taught at Bodine Highschool. I remember meeting him my Junior Yr in 2004. I had the worse track record when it came to Math, but somehow Mr. Malloy made it seem so easy. Whether it was using his lunch break to help me prepare for midterms or staying after school to help me prepare for finals he never wanted his students to fail, and I remember asking him once why does it matter and he said because if you fail then I fail, that his job as an educator was to make sure he got through to his students.
He was always filled with so much life. He always had a big smile when we walked into his classroom, ive never seen someone so excited and enthused to teach Math, its no wonder he won teacher of the yr award! That man deserved it! Mr. Malloy really liked joking with us Fishtown kids he always knew how to make us laugh. He truly was a ray of light. Although its been years since we’ve talked I never did forget him, he was just one of those teachers who make an impact on you! I am forever grateful for having known him. I am so sadden to hear of his passing. The world really lost a great man. I send my condolences and sympathy to his family and may he forever rest in peace.

I'm having trouble expressing the weight I feel from your passing, Brian. The silver lining for me is that even now, you're teaching us to live while we can and bring joy to that life and to the lives of others. What a teacher you continue to be. Thank you for the privilege of knowing and working with you, Brian. We had a lot more living lined up to do with you, but we'll continue that now with Janet, and with you alongside in the hearts and memories of your extended community family.

Janet, Jim and Jon - I can't tell you how sorry I am. I know how much you will miss him. I know that I will miss chatting with him on the phone or seeing him when he came through Atlanta on his way to Destin. He was a great husband, father and brother. My heart is just broken. Love you all, Dave
