Brian Stucka Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 4, 2024.
Brian Reid Stucka, 57, passed away on April 27th, 2024 at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, surrounded by family and friends. The cause of death was a heart infection that required valve reconstructive surgery, but which he couldn't survive.

He was born March 11th, 1967 on Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas - the son of Daniel Allen Stucka and Norene Willers Stucka. As father Dan transitioned from the military to the Air National Guard and later a career in finance, the family relocated to the northern Chicago suburbs where Brian's parents had each grown up. Brother Daryl was born in 1970 and brother Tim followed in 1980. They remained close all their lives.

Brian's childhood was spent in the Glencoe, IL public school system and at New Trier High School, from which he graduated in 1985. He often spoke fondly of the strong friendships he made and good-natured mischief he got into during these formative years. College studies brought Brian (and later brother Daryl) to Iowa City, where he was popular with his peers and became President of his Sigma Pi fraternity. He so thoroughly enjoyed the experience that he added an extra semester, ultimately graduating in 1990 and declaring college "the best four-and-a-half years of my life" :)

He moved to Chicago in 1992 and began a successful three-decade career in the options trading industry. Brian spent the nineties as a market maker on the CBOE trading floor, where he shared an office known as the Sage Group with his father Dan, brother Daryl, and several other fellow traders and close friends. Starting in 2000, he started working directly for the CBOE exchange as a software analyst, which led to subsequent roles with trading tech leaders, most recently FlexTrade. During these years he also met lovely Elaine, who was not only an acquaintance through the Chicago trading community, but also a professional chef. They married in 2005, and spent more than two happy decades together in Barrington, IL & Santa Clarita, CA. Their doors were always open to friends & neighbors, and their parties were always full and lively.

Those who have spent even a small amount of time with Brian rave about his zest for life, his grand stories, his quickness with a smile or a joke. His work colleagues described him as "truly a pleasure to work with, and universally liked by anyone he interacted with". Brian lived life to the max, and he will be sorely missed by us all.

Brian is survived by his wife Elaine, his parents Dan & Norene, his brothers Daryl & Tim, and close relatives across the Stucka & Johnson families. He will be cremated according to his wishes, and continue to fill our memories with his warmth and light.

I was never a close friend of Brian's but he certainly treated me like I was. In fact he treated everyone that way. You never like to see anyone pass away but when it's somebody with Brian's love for life it makes it even sadder. He and his wife Elaine were always very welcoming people. Brian left behind many great memories.

For some reason Brian came to mind the other day. Needless to say this is hard to see. Summers on Drexel with his brothers, model airplanes, trespassing at the Gunn's house, hockey and always Brian's good nature and genuine friendliness. We lost touch in high school so I didn't know him as an adult but I am not at all surprised to see what people have written here about his exceptional qualities. I am so sorry for his family and his wife. Rest in peace, old friend.

It was both a pleasure and privilege to have known Brian and his wonderful wife, Elaine. He was a true mensch. They made for such a strong partnership, each caring for the other as was needed. But it went beyond that in how they both cared for others. They were so nice to my late wife, Zahava, when we were together in New Orleans, and there is no way that I can repay that kindness. I will miss Brian and I send my love and condolences to Elaine.

It is hard to put into words what a great guy Brian truly was. He was always there to lend hand or laugh, whatever was required at the time...he just seemed to know. He will truly be missed!! Rest in peace my friend.

I am so sorry to hear about Brian´s passing. He was a smart, funny and kind co-worker at CBOE and worked well with everyone. Brian was even keeled; a most welcomed trait in that often intense world. My thoughts are with Brian´s wife, parents, brothers and extended family. Peace.

I met Brian his freshman year at the University of Iowa. He joined the Sigma Pi house where we became fast friends. We had lots of similar interests in cars, motorcycles, basically anything with wheels and an engine, skiing, football and having fun in and around Iowa City, Iowa. I have lot's of Brian stories and we spent quite a bit of time together. I was the one that told him to follow his dreams and move to California. He loved living out west and he was always exploring everything California has to offer. I'm going to miss our weekly calls and his need to argue about something. I'm going to miss Brian dearly. He was an outstanding friend and always had something interesting to discuss. Peace out Brother!

Sincere condolences for the loss of Brian. He was lots of fun and had in infectious smile. Brian and John Wirtz (my younger brother) had fun being teen trouble makers. Out running the Glencoe cops by turning off their car lights as they sped around town. They came to visit me in St. Louis and to drive my car home. The car died on the way, they left it at the side of the highway and maybe hitchhiked back to Chicago. The car never made it back to Chicago.

I have been fortunate to interact with Brian frequently throughout his almost 14 years at FlexTrade and have nothing but fond recollections. Brian came to FlexTrade with a wealth of Options trading knowledge both from CBOE and Actant. At a time when FlexTrade Systems had very limited Options trading functionality, Brian's knowledge, contribution and ability to articulate what was missing in FlexTrade platform has been immensely valuable. Brian genuinely cared about the customers as well as colleagues and always took time to make thoughtful suggestions to make FlexTrade and its products better. It was a pleasure to see Brian and Elaine at our annual office parties as they brought so much joy to folks around them. Brian always maintained a positive outlook and permeated that positivity to anyone he interacted with. I am grateful to have known Brian and am deeply saddened that he is no more amongst us. May God give Elaine and Brian's family the strength to cope with the loss. We at FlexTrade will always cherish his memories. April 27th happens to be my birthday and I will always miss him that day.
Sincerely, Vijay Kedia
