Brian Vandenberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 29, 2025.
It is with heartbreaking sadness that the Vandenberg family announces the passing of Brian David Vandenberg, 63, of Jackson Hole, WY, and formerly of Chicago and Lake Forest, IL, on March 20, 2025.

Brian was born in Kaukauna, WI, on December 2, 1961, to Kay (née Killian) and the late Lyle Vandenberg. He graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1980, the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse in 1984, and earned his JD from DePaul University College of Law in 1987. But DePaul gave him more than a law degree – it was there that he met his beloved wife, Jamie (née Zenner) Vandenberg. She would "magically appear" outside of Brian's classes until he noticed her, eventually capturing his heart. They married in 1987 and together built a life in Lake Forest. They shared 37 extraordinary years of marriage, and with Jamie by his side, Brian became the cherished father of Cody (Monika) Vandenberg, Mykel (Aristothomas) Nicholson, and Tyler (Hannah) Vandenberg. Cody's 7-month-old son, Leo Vandenberg, was Brian's first grandchild – and his absolute pride and joy.

The power of family gave Brian the foundation for his life's work, both as a lawyer and as a visionary in the healthcare industry. From 1991 to 1999, he practiced law at his private firm, Rosenblum & Vandenberg. He then turned his attention to transforming the healthcare landscape. At Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, he helped reimagine the way prescriptions were processed and delivered. As General Counsel at Livongo, he focused on helping people with chronic conditions live happier, healthier lives. From 2017 to 2022, Brian served as SVP and General Counsel at the American Medical Association (AMA), the largest association of physicians and medical students in the United States. Most recently, in 2022, he joined the executive team at Homeward, a healthcare platform rearchitecting the delivery of health and care in partnership with communities everywhere, beginning in rural America.

Brian's passion and philanthropic spirit spanned numerous areas of impact. His empathy was limitless, and he made meaningful change in the world. Brian never sat back and watched the world go by – he always chose to participate.

From the start, Brian had a deep love for athletics – particularly track and field. Throughout his high school and college career, he competed in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump, and went on to manage track athletes on an international stage, founding the Track & Field Association in 1997 – an organization that elevated the prominence of U.S. track athletes and created wide visibility for the sport he so loved. He was also an avid cyclist, riding along the Chicago lakeshore with friends and loved ones, admiring the vibrant murals, culture, and architecture. Come autumn, his love of sport extended to football, where he was known to make regular trips to Lambeau Field as a devoted Packers fan.

This same devotion to athletics was reflected in his unwavering commitment to vital equity and inclusion initiatives. The Vandenberg Health Equity Fund supports five economic scholarships, pledging over $700,000 to the AMA Foundation's Physicians of Tomorrow scholarship program. In 2023, in memory of his father, Brian also established the Lyle L. Vandenberg Rural Health Scholarship, awarded annually to students in the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, Nursing, or Pharmacy who demonstrate a commitment to improving healthcare access and reducing disparities in small towns and rural communities. For Breakthrough T1D, he was instrumental in recruiting riders from Livongo, AMA, and Homeward to fundraise and participate in cycling events to help fight Type 1 diabetes.

Brian also cultivated a lifelong connection to the arts, serving on the Board of Directors for Uniting Voices Chicago (formerly the Chicago Children's Choir) for 15 years, inspired by their mission to change lives through music, which he deeply appreciated. For Brian, music made everything better – inspiring, uplifting, and calming him. Alongside his son, Cody, and former AMA friends and colleagues, Brian co-founded a film production company, Truthlight Studio, which emphasizes stories and projects centered on health equity.

Above all, Brian's family was his everything. Cody, Mykel, and Tyler describe him as "a deep listener – ever-present, selfless, empathetic, witty, and wise" – and in every way possible, they will miss him deeply. In addition to his wife, Jamie, and their immediate family, Brian is survived by his mother, Kay Vandenberg; siblings Kyle Brush, Jill (Jonathan) Jest, Amy (Jeff) Pricco, and Sara Penick; his brothers-in-law Brad (Shari) Zenner and Craig (the late Jenny) Zenner; and his loving nieces and nephews. He was also a wonderful son-in-law to his late in-laws, Merrill and Barbara Zenner.

The Vandenberg family is planning a Celebration of Life on Sunday, April 27 at 11:00 a.m. CDT at the Chicago Cultural Center (Preston Bradley Hall), 78 E Washington St, Chicago, IL 60602.

So sorry; I am very late in hearing this awful news- these days I live near Philadelphia & tend to get "out of the loop." I, too, was a 1984 grad of UW-LaCrosse and a track teammate of "Vandy." Even though I was a nutty distance runner and Brian did "all the jumps," we new each other quite well- it was the LACROSSE WAY to love & respect your teammates, and that´s why we WON all the time!! . It looks to me that Vandy did many amazing things after UW-L; that´s not a surprise & I know all who knew him were blessed to have done so. R.I.P. Brian! -Peter Dodd, Hanover PA.

I spent seven days with Brian riding 468 miles across Iowa in July 2015 (RAGBRAI). We slept in tents, met lots of great people and had a blast, I will never forget that trip!! I also worked with Brian at Allscripts for 6+ years. Brian was a great guy and he will be missed. My condolences to the family.

Brian and I overlapped at the AMA for only a brief - but impactful time. I remember a conversation about the potential opportunities for those of us who focus on health equity to make it count- and didn´t realize how large his imprint was as a mentor until I would mention his name and each time someone would say- here´s what Brian did to change my professional life...give me a chance to....how he supports his team, medical students... and on and on. His influence on those of us lucky to have met him will long endure in his many legacy projects. Sending my deepest condolences to all who loved Brian.

While I had not had the pleasure to meet Brian, the stories I have heard of his kind heart and work ethic are much beyond anything I have ever witnessed. I am sure he was a man of honor and he will be truly missed. My condolences to all experiencing this heavy loss.

Brian was one of the people I've met along the way that I always wanted to spend more time with. He was magnetic. I remember him first from our time serving on the Lake Forest High School Booster Club Board. In that experience, he was the brightest light in a room filled with bright lights. He was reasonable, inspirational, personable, creative, and incredibly fun to be around. And he got things done.

After Boosters, our relationship morphed into intermittent lunches and chance meetings in town. When we would reconnect, Brian was always so engaging and gracious. I left those meetings wanting more of him. But he was an incredibly popular person and, as such, his time was dear. Despite that, Brian was one of those rare people who could be completely "with you" when he was. One of his many wonderful qualities.

When Brian and Jamie moved away from Lake Forest, first to Chicago and then to Wyoming, I remember feeling like we'd really lost something here in Lake Forest. And now I'm feeling the lost more acutely. I will genuinely miss Brian. And I will genuinely remember Brian with fondness that goes well beyond the time I was able to spend with him.

I am saddened to hear of Brian's passing. My heart goes out to the entire Vandenberg family and all of his many friends. My memories of "Boogie" are of him being a very giving individual. He took the time out of his very busy/active highschool life to make shirts for a group of us distance runners to go to our first marathon in Milwaukee. He was always doing things for others. RIP to a great teammate and human being!

My heart is broken for all of the Vandenberg family members. The abilities that came so easily to Brian were a reflection of how Lyle & Kay raised & nurtured him & his sisters. A family who loved each other unconditionally & respected
each other & all those who they met in life were only some of Brian's many attributes. His love of Jamie & their family were obvious to those who had the opportunity to see or talk to him on a daily basis.

Brian made a difference in our world. His commitment & longing to make each day the best it could be for everyone will be tremendously missed by all who knew him & especially those who loved him.

May he rest in peace.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Brian. I had the privilege of working with him, and in that time, I was truly touched by his kindness, patience, and the way he always listened with understanding. He had a remarkable ability to make those around him feel valued, and his leadership was defined not just by wisdom, but by the genuine care he showed for others.

His impact on our organization and on those who worked with him will never be forgotten. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. May his legacy of compassion and integrity continue to inspire us all.

With deepest condolences,
