Brian Vrooman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 28 to Mar. 31, 2019.
Vrooman, Brian Craig 7/13/1951 - 3/19/2019 Ann Arbor Brian Craig Vrooman (Craig) Craig Vrooman died peacefully on March 19th at the University of Michigan Hospital surrounded by his loving family after battling cancer for 8 months. His passing leaves a tremendous void in the lives and hearts of those who knew him. Craig was born in Windsor, Ontario, on July 13, 1951 to Isabel and Albert Vrooman. Although he became a U.S. citizen, he always felt a strong affinity to his Canadian roots. He graduated from the University of Winsdor with a degree in geology. After five years of service as a geologist with the Canadian Government in Ottawa and Saskatchewan, he moved to Ann Arbor to pursue an MBA at the University of Michigan. This was a life changing experience for him leading to his career in financial planning and investment advising. In 1990 he created Vrooman & Associates where he spent 30 years committed to helping his clients achieve their financial goals. He earned numerous credentials and accolades in his field and was a highly valued member of Raymond James Financial Services. In his life outside of work, Craig took great joy in water sports of all kinds: swimming, boating, scuba diving, water polo and most of all sailing. He had many happy sailing trips with his Uncle Bill on Lake Ontario. Then as a member of the Ann Arbor Flounders for 30 years, he played water polo every week with a group of men who became dear friends. It was there that he found new sailing buddies. In recent years, they sailed every summer in Lake Huron's majestic North Channel. He wouldn't miss this trip for the world, not even cancer! Most of all Craig was a man of his word. Although humble, he prided himself on his adherence to his core values: discipline, loyalty, integrity. He was always a dependable and trusted husband, father and friend. He will be dearly missed and his memory forever cherished. His is survived by his loving wife, Laura Dykstra, his beloved children, Katherine and David (Risa) Vrooman, his stepson, Jason Bednarz (Dannene), his grandchildren, Alex & Joey Vrooman and Zachary & Jada Drummond-Bednarz, his brother, Scott Vrooman (Ann), his nephew & niece, Adam & Sarah Vrooman, his aunt and uncle, Bill & Lois Reynolds. A Celebration of Craig's Life will take place on Sunday, May 19th at the Ann Arbor City Club at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Palliative Care Fund at the University of Michigan. Checks may be made to "University of Michigan" and sent to the Michigan Medicine Office of Development, 1000 Oakbrook Dr., Ste. 100, Ann Arbor, MI 48104 or visit the website https://victors.us/craigvrooman Condolences and memories can be shared at [email protected] Cremation was handled by Generations Funeral & Cremation Services.
