Brita Moehrke Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 2, 2016.
Stina (Brita Kristina Reed) Moehrke, 74, of Tucson Arizona, died June 1, 2016, with family by her side.
Stina was born June 28, 1941, in Nyack, New York to Carleton and Brita (Ohberg) Reed.
She graduated from New Paltz High School in New Paltz, New York, where she met her husband, Karl Eric Moehrke. She also attended Sara Lawrence College. Stina and Karl married on May 8, 1960 and began their 26 year journey together as an Army family.
Her list of accomplishments and people whose lives she touched are too great to list. A few highlights are; being a devoted Army wife and a mother that taught her children to embrace all of their moves to other countries and states as a great adventure. This included North Carolina, New Jersey, Massachusetts, California, New York, Germany, Ethiopia and Okinawa. Always the adventurer, she also has visited a large portion of the United States as well as Italy, France, Austria, Taiwan, Greece, Mexico, Canada, Estonia, Sweden, Russia, Norway, Latvia, Switzerland, Finland and Croatia.
Young Stina spent many summers at Aloha Camp in Fairlee Vermont. She was a camper there, obtaining the highest level of campership (Admiral) meaning she was an expert at canoeing, sailing, archery, hiking etc. She also worked there as a counselor. Aloha was always a large part of her life. "And the best thing that Aloha means, is I love you."
While living in Ethiopia she worked as a dental assistant (assisting with a visit from Haile Selassie) and taught at an International School. On Okinawa, two of her positions were as a magazine editor and director of a pre-school at Camp Kuwae. In Massachusetts she ran the office at the Deaf Community Center in Framingham, did advertising for a large planned community and ran the offices for a garage and for an oil company. There was nothing that she couldn't do and she excelled in all of her endeavors.
Always wanting to learn more she had many hobbies. To name a few; travelling, weaving, craft projects, calligraphy, cooking, gardening, needlepoint and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by husband Karl Eric Moehrke, son David Eric Moehrke (Linda Marie Moehrke) of Lacey, WA, daughter Bina( Kristina Elin) Oulton (Timothy Patrick Oulton) of Tucson, AZ, grandson Tyler Patrick Oulton of Tucson, AZ, brother Carl Arnold Reed (Kate Leonard) of CO, nephew Gus (Carl Gustaf) Reed (Angela Schultz) of WI, niece Brita F Mutti (Jamie Muttie) of CO and great-nephews as well as extended family and friends that will miss her dearly.
Stina fought a long battle with failing health over the last year but was never alone. The weekend prior she was surrounded by family and friends and when she peacefully passed, Karl and Bina were at her side and holding her hands.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Stina spent her last week at Peppi's House (Tucson Medical Center's Hospice) and was treated with so much love and compassion. Those wishing to honor Stina and in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to the TMC Hospice Endowment, 5301 East Grant Road, Tucson, AZ 85712. Memorial gifts may also be made online at www.tmcfoundation.org. If making a donation, please do so in the name of Brita K Moehrke.

. So when learning of what happened I brought out the most vivid
memory from visiting Stina in Tucson ...early mornings in the kitchen talking to her about the old country.....and now....
wiping tears from my old face....thinking about the sadness overwhelming all of you....
The best wishes for Karl, her love, and everyone of you all...There will always stay a little piece of Stina in Sweden in Värsås and in my heart.

Stina and I were classmates at New Paltz High School. We shared many fun moments. I was sorry to learn of her passing; may she rest in peace.

Our friendship began when Stina worked at the Groton Center for the Arts and took on every creative challenge that came her way. We got to know her family and how important they were to her. Our friendship continued when the Moehrke family moved west and then returned to Massachusetts. We have wonderful memories and the treasure that comes from a special friendship. Loving thoughts to Stina's family. They were always at the center of her life.
